Late to the party (as usual). I think that people think they’re either ‘pushing the boundaries’ or simply just following the trend when it comes to stuff like this.

It’s interesting as it seems to be where a lot of people think guitar music is progressing to, but imho it’s bland sterile rubbish. Appreciate its down to personal taste, but the current crop of millennial ‘look at me, with my hyper-clean reverby tapping all over the place’ musical dirge just leaves me cold.

polyphia are just one band that springs to mind. If it’s your thing then brilliant, but it really doesn’t do anything for me

So, I know this isn’t going to help, and is probably ill considered and totally unfounded.

But when I saw this, my brain just went “Well, yeah James, I’ve got three necks, so there!”

    :)

There’s a reason guitars evolved with 6 strings. But hey it’s art. If someone’s into it that’s there thing. It just doesn’t peak my interest or musical tastes. It’s a novelty. And man they must be heavy. I can see the Sweetwater adds now, weighs 24 lbs 5 ounces!

I swear, at the beginning as he walked out onto the jetty I thought he was going to jump in and surf.

Not on the subject of tapping but on the subject of extra strings:

I'm reminded of when someone asked Victor Wooten why he doesn't play five or six string basses.

"I don't NEED but four strings to be funky."

    Charlie Hunter said once:

"If you can't shred, SLOW DOWN. They're not going to remember you as that guy who couldn't play fast, they'll just remember you as that guy who couldn't play."

And I'll be honest, that's EXACTLY what I think about that guy with the Warr guitar and the horrible meter.

And you know he's self conscious about it too. He excuses his playing before he even starts. "I've been sick all week. *CRACKS KNUCKLES*"

Does EVH count as a "tapping on a multistringed extended range instrument?"

His Frankenstrat had multiple strings... Not more than 6, but, it did have a D-Tuna for 2 half-steps of exended range...

In the 1980’s I bought a Yamaha keyboard. My little niece was playing with it when her grandpa walked in . He thought she was some kind of prodigy. Until she stopped playing ,the auto accompaniment was really all he was hearing

And, lo and behold, even Tony Levin once got the question:

    Q : "Why three strings?"
    A: "Why FOUR !?!?"

Why he didn't stick to his guns, I dunno...(ha!)

Yes, indeed. Novelty kind of instrument. Looks way cool though. It's moreso the players than anything else.

Mind you that I've never ever seen heard Tony Levin TAP or do tapping on his regular Music Man bass regardless, of it being his 3 strings bass, 4 string, or 5 string Stingray basses. He just keeps his tapping skills to his Stick.

I think his 3 stringed bass was even a little more bowed (radiused) on the neck to resemble an upright bass, and to facilitate using a real bow, or more likely, his Funk Fingers to "drum" on his strings without hitting the adjacent strings accidentally.

Speaking of which, there's at least one playing 7/8 string guitar that doesn't exclusively tap on the instrument. Fanned fret even. BTW I don't think I ever heard him tap anyway a whole song through. It just sounds so much better...loong notes... albeit this example is a bit pedestrian for him...

Well, when he taps, still tickety-tockety, no matter how fast.... he does not tap exclusively though - which definitely is good, to his credit - as is evident on his right overdubbed (or not) regular bass guitar lines. He uses both tapping AND plucking, even pop, thumb, slapping. On the Stick it's the same "tickety-tockety" arpeggios.

Like if you're sitting at an office desktop table impatiently waiting for someone/something, and starts to tap fingers on the top of the table, nervously. Drrrrrum, drrrum, drrummm...;)

I mean, here's a perfect example. Even tap master Stanley Jordan has finally resorted to pick strumming, and using a pick. Now, you all know how this tune goes, by the almighty Hendrix. Which part of the solo rubs you the most (either way), the plucked part or the tapping part? ;)
