I hated this song as a kid when it was on the radio. and I still hate it, but it was stuck in my head this morning.
googling, i was quite surprised to learn it's the commodores, i'd've guessed more like gerry rafferty or seals and crofts or christopher cross or some other yacht rock outfit like that.

it's totally got that lame cliche white 70s singer/songwriter thing going for it

It certainly mixes genres in many clever ways.

Song that, like that 'perfect woman in the dream', keeps 'rollin' 'cross my mind' : 'Natural High' Bloodstone. Many wedding gigs and the accompanying great chow! Unfortunately, could never pick up any women though... (they were all spoken for-and I'm not crazy!)

"I know it's a shame, but I'm givin' you back your name."

Love the way this song is constructed - some great twists and change ups. I've tried an acoustic version at an open mic but couldn't really pull off the coda.

Lionel Richie wrote or co-wrote more hits than the law allows.

Ahhhhh.... K-Tel still rears it's ugly head in my life with the Commode-ores.

Yacht rock. I know if I ever achieve that kind of financial security I'll have a vessel to fling myself from.

Yacht rock. A phrase that's new to me. And one that describes the music perfectly. Thanks!

    Okay...
The song wasn’t written by some ‘lame cliched white’ songwriter but as it turns out by a lame, cliched black songwriter, right????
Point being, I don’t understand the racial thing. If the song is lame and cliched, that is what it is....no matter who wrote it.

Fwiw, Although that song doesn’t stand out as one of the greatest songs of all time, I always found it better than average for a pop song.

I was just surprised to learn it was the Commodes. As i said, I always pictured some 70s wannabe folkskinger thing, and while I said yacht rock, there's also a strong countrypolitan/folk singer/songwriter feeling to it, to me.
the style and also the vocals seem more smooth/boringboz scaggs or something, and I was surprised

I can definitely imagine a country version of this(if there isn't one already), maybe Darius Rucker or alike.

Maybe there's a closet Yacht Rocker inside all of us.
