Gil, Good to see you doing a Thinline. I'll watch with great interest. Curious though,
if you had to do this build with wood that us mere mortals can obtain what would you use?

Same thing. Nothing I use is unobtainable!
Just spend some time asking around lumber yards and wood importers.
Okoume can be special ordered in solid lumber (4/4, 8/4 etc) if you are willing to get the minimum quantity. A group buy might be good but I doubt luthiers will jump on this because it's a tough wood to store although it sounds ridiculously good.

Very nice grain/figure on the Okoume. I can hear a ringing knuckle rap tone just looking at it! Will you be making more than one Thinline in this build?

No, as far as Teles, just a 52 Blackguard and 51 NoCaster in addition to the Thinline.

I too am excited about getting in on the first page. I don't know how many days of "work" I lost catching up on the LP build. Thanks Gil, it is amazing to watch you at work!

Thanks for sharing again, Preeb!

Can I ask: why did you use the router around the outside of
the body after robo-sanding?

Having only made a few bodies, I've been thinking of using
a robo-sander and no routing because of the small tears
I tend to get with routing inside the horns and sometimes
along the bottom of the body.

I know from your past threads and the pics that you use a
spiral routing bit. Does this play into it?

I got home last night preeb in time to tell my son that you were building a new guitar and it wasn't going to be historically correct.

This was his reaction.

Oooo, what is this nifty little sander gadget you have in the drill press. I like that, I can think of a bunch of great uses for one of those. I love reading your threads not only to see a master at his craft but I can get great ideas to use in my own garage.

Thank you again, Gil

Thank you for sharing Gil.
I'll be following this one and I'm sure I'll learn a lot!

I started building guitars about a year ago (build threads are coming soon)
and I really "got the bug". TDPRI is an amazing thing and i'm grateful and thankful to all members how share their knowledge.
It was also a nice thing to find out that one of the master builders who hangs out here is from Israel...hopefully i'll get the chance to pick your brain in the future.

The spiral can't remove too much wood in one pass and is a delicate bit.
I robosand first and leave about 1/16" for routing. No tearouts.

It's a $2 rotary sanding pad that does the same jog as a $600 thicknesser and takes a little less space (-;
I can also use any grit (5" sanding velcro discs) for different jobs.

The Thinline design lends itself to a lot of experimentation and modification. I've done three non-standard takes on the design in the last few years. I can't wait to see what you do with it.

Since this is not a vintage theme - any thoughts on an improved neck pocket for upper fret access or perhaps how to do the cambering to balance out the neck's weight?

I'd like to second this -- I'd love to see you tackle an angled heel like on a Music Man. That is, if you're taking requests!
