I've been without an actual grill since my girlfriend left in August of 2021, and took hers that I'd rebuilt. Such is life.

I've been cooking outdoors on a Camp Chef two-burner gas rig with a reversible iron griddle (flat on one side, the other has ridges for sear marks). It does a stellar job for burgers, tuna steaks, and beef steaks, and breakfast stuff; but lately I've been wanting something cooked over charcoal occasionally.

Years ago I got started grilling with a cheap little tabletop hibachi that I used for years till it finally rusted out at the fasteners and I had to retire it. It was easy to use and clean and the adjustments for grill height made it ideal for controlling the heat.

I did a quick Google shopping search and there are tons of neat ones out there. I live alone, seldom entertain, and so I don't need anything great big or pricey.

Anybody using a hibachi, or portable tailgating type charcoal grill you'd recommend?

I had a Lodge hibachi. It turned to dust in a few years. The grill has held up, though. I use it in my fireplaces/woodstoves.

I had, and used one extensively, about 35 years ago.
Great, simple little inventions.
I grilled fish on mine, including fish I caught in the lakes and rivers around here.
My wife had a real job, so I did the cooking.
The hibachi made clean up time easy.
Worked great!

You've made me want one! We used to have one, and I'd forgotten how easy it was to use and take care of. Now that it's only the wife and I around the home twenty, a Hibachi grill would make perfect sense!

We are presently using an LPG fired grill that has a big old five-gallon tank on it. We don't use it very much, because if the wind is blowing any at all it's a pain to keep going.

I've pretty much given up on grilling. Over the years grill rigs have gotten crazy expensive, while at the same time they have gotten crazy crappy; they don't seem to last more than a couple years, even if kept covered and only occasionally used. Plus the propane tanks are only half-filled now, because "safety", yet they still cost 3 times as much.

If the kids want to grill, we have a little fire pit. I just put an old wire grille, from one of the old ones that rusted out, on top of the pit, it works fine.

Haven’t used a hibachi in close to 40 years. It was great for a couple of burgers, dogs, sausages and the like.

I had a Magma that I used on the stern rail of my sailboat. Bought a set of legs for it and took it camping. A great stainless grill. I remember it was quite pricey back then and I’m sure they in the “ouch” zone price wise today.

I don't know if there is a brand of kamado style grill that is priced to even come close to a good ole hibachi, but they are pretty awesome.
Have had Green Egg for close to 30 years...it was a hard pill to swallow price wise at the time, but 30 years is a pretty good return. they come in a few different sizes but I have no idea how ridiculous they may price out at these days.
Good luck ...and yes its hard to beat that charcoal flavour

Yes, I have a Big Green Egg too. IMHO it's the best charcoal grilling invention ever! It is spendy though. The small 13"D grill ones are about $500.

I used hibachi's for years. great for grilling for a couple of people. I didn't think you could find them these days. Get one.

I have a neat little cast iron grill from Lodge that's essentially a hibachi- I like it a lot, but I'm pretty used to grilling with a cover and I use my Smoky Joe more often.

I bought a cheap one at Ace Hadware to take camping. It worked great and I will probably use it at home more often. Not sure how well it will hold up, but for $30, I’ll just get another.

Now we're talking!

My lady friend looked at a couple Webers at Academy Sports yesterday, and the table top version was like $90.

I had both. The double squares and a single square. Loved them.

I just bought one for the family for Christmas. I am going to have to teach the boys to keep it out of the rain. 😁
