Records were referred to as records. Albums as records, or as the Spanish micturating conquistador, El Pee. Singles were singles. Cassettes were tapes Sometimes a single was a record, ex: you just played side 'A' of a newly purchased single, you get up to turn the record over. As far as my fuggled recall works, the term 'Vinyl' as a catch-all didn't enter the lexicon until the CD had grown to dominance. I remember it being used as a pre-hipster term, 'spinning the vinyl/put the vinyl on the deck' or somesuch nonsense, but it was largely confined to referring to the material, or a collection of the material when other media were present. Will the CD ever be referred to as 'buying the new release on polycarbonate'? One hopes not.
