You're not the only one. Give it a close listen, once you know, you can't unhear it, and when you know how difficult it is to get accurate tones of a theramin, you can't be too impressed :)

I think it's also just so appropriate because it's such a science fiction-y geeky instrument. Spock would play a Theramin if he ever took an interest in music

I have one. It showed up in the mail one day from a friend in Germany. It is a Moog Etherwave Pro Birdseye Maple.
    I've seen them from 5k to 8k.

They are cool. I built one from a kit once. My impression is you need BIG stuff. The little one I had had little control, your hand had to be very close to a specific range area and changed pitch very sensitively. SIZE MATTERS?

My little one required much closer and much more minute movements than the one in the video.

Yep! Agree! Actually, Nimoy was a big music lover and somewhat played guitar I believe. I'm rather surprised that he didn't lobby for a theramin in a scene somewhere... most illogical ;)

I built a Moog Etherwave from a kit in 1998. Assembly went fine, but I remember it took quite a bit of fiddling to get the oscillators into the right ratio.
I recall needing to use an AM radio in the process.

I would recommend spending the extra $$ and getting one that is factory assembled. They claim no electronics experience needed, but I had to use RF theory to get mine running.

I built the PAiA Theremax. Much easier to assemble than to play. Kids like it.

Just as an aside, this Jon Spenser clip is one of the greatest things I've ever seen.

I came to say the same.

I wish he'd do another Boss Hog album.

This is the video I was thinking about earlier, it wasn't Adam Neely, it's some other guy but no matter, this is long but great

I was about to echo that sentiment, but then remembered that they have one sound, and it isn't super interesting. It does sound cool, but it's the playing method that's cool, mostly. It's very fun, being the only(?) instrument you can play with kung fu moves, but I don't need one. I don't know why I don't play the saw though. I have a saw. And a bow.
