First thoughts were...
AC/DC? (Aussie's and a Brit singer) nope
Van Halen?
Had nothing after that, and nodded to myself in agreement.
Montrose in 1973 were way ahead of their time. Probably the first great American hard rock band. Although, I love my Styx and Blue Öyster Cult too. This is timeless.

I just wish they had pulled stumps when Waters left. Gilmour is a great sideman but not a creative force.

You've had me pondering on the meaning of Top, but I won't get into any hair splitting on its meaning, other than to say Top for me would be 1 out of those 5 (2 at a stretch). That is bands of which I own all of their main releases.
However, strangely enough the other 4 "Top bands" on my list would be...

The Police (2/3rds UK)
U2 (1/2 UK: Adam Clayton is English, Dave Evans aka The Edge is Welsh)
Thin Lizzy (at least 1/2 Irish throughout entire time)
Other bands/artists with whom I've bought all of their major releases would stretch to...

The Skids (UK)
Big Country (UK)

I could see the Beatles & Led Zeppelin being the top 2 British bands because the Beatles are like olive oil & Led Zeppelin are like malted vinegar with a twist of lemon zest with the rhines. When combined they make a unique Rock 'n' Roll dressing drizzled on a fresh salad laced with crunchy rock hard croutons.

Arguably AC/DC are British by birth Angus, Malcolm and Bon all spent the first 6-10 years of their lives in Scotland.
Of course, this all depends on your definition of 'rock'. I'm thinking 'Free', which is IMO the first real hard rock band and British. Not Deep Purple or Black Sabbath, that's IMO proto metal.

Thé question is who are the American bands that top them? Beach Boys, Byrds, Eagles, Hendrix you can claim either way, the Dead, Petty/Heartbreakers, Los Lobos, Nirvana would be possibilities I guess. Aerosmith, maybe Cheap Trick.
My list would be mostly British, but not necessarily the five suggested.

Out of the five bands listed by the op, The Rolling Stones are the only band I listen to and have bought their albums.
