Here's some jump blues on the cheap...

Gary Primich was an Austin legend who is missed. And Nick was a huge loss as well.

Since the early eighties, Jimmie Vaughan was my biggest guitar hero. He still is, but I had to put Nick Curran on the top of my heroes when I heard him. I took some videos of his gig at Tampere / Finland and I put them in Youtube. Soon I got a "support message" from an american "punk band". Nick was playing with them...
But, what on earth is he playing from his guitar on this video at 0:55..?

It sounded like some major chord/country lick with pulloffs and open strings. Nick could play many styles proficiently.
For instance, this sounds like early T-Birds with Jimmie to me.

This song is considered to be the beginning of jump blues c. 1942.

Rod Piazza has ruled the Southern California scene for a long long time. Here is an early clip. Junior Watson on guitar.

Rod was a disciple of George Harmonica Smith

I really like / love many kinds of music (rockabilly, ska, reggae, surf, bluegrass,ac/dc, zztop, doowop etc. etc.), but jump blues is propably the one I would like to play the most. Nice to see these old videos here. There's one that's not too old - clearly in the footsteps of Nick..? Sad, but I think this band already quit? Anyways, a great video, song and performance:

4 pages.... and only ONE mention of West Coast Blues, and NO INSOMNIACS yet???

I'd give a kidney to be in a swinging jump blues band... not much of that around here...

Gotta' get some Junior Watson up in here...

A lot of Jump is based around a chord sequence that differs from the regular i-iv-v stuff. Its almost always a quick change, but instead of a 5-4-1, you get either a mii-v-i, or hold the v. The rhythm normally accents the 2 and 4 beats.

A lot more 6th and 9th chords, rather than dom7th, and plenty of horn stabs. Ba ba, ba bada.

Can be done easily with just one chord too...
