My day job boss is an animal lover. She loves to rescue animals. So, when a kitten showed up at our workplace she caught it and brought it in. She put it in a cage to get it used to us. Then the cat somehow escaped the cage and was unseen for a few days. Then she showed up in my cubicle space. I'm not a cat person but I befriended her and fed her so I became her person. She's very nervous and skiddish around most other people and other cats. That happened about 6 years ago. In that time she's been inside, only going outside briefly a handful of times before getting scared and running back inside.

So in that 6 year period my boss adopted a bunch more cats, from all different places, and some ferel. I don't know how many there were at maximum cat overload, maybe 15 or so. And they did what cats do, which is pee everywhere, even though they had several litter boxes.

The boss's husband had had it with cats, and things finally came to a head last week. He threw out all of the cats except one that is sickly and, I was told, the two that live in my space (the other one was an old cat, like 17 years old or so, and it was decided that he was too old, and had always been a housecat). Then I came into work and found out that "my" cat, the one that chose my cubicle to live it, was thrown out, too. I found out later that it was because my boss's husband came in that morning and she had pee'd on the counter. So he threw her out. After her being inside for 6 years she was suddenly thrust into the outside world to fend for herself. I was stunned and didn't know what to do. It wasn't what he told me was going to happen, and I kinda felt betrayed. I had gotten used to that little cat. She would sit on my lap or lean against my arm while I was working, and SHE had chosen ME. I should have gone to look for her right then but I was kinda frozen. That was on a Friday.

The following Monday I went looking for her, but I couldn't find her. I was pretty sad and I told myself that if I found her, if she was okay, that I would take her home with me. I have an outside cat at home and I don't really like/want an indoor cat. I've dated girls who had indoor cats and they jump up on the kitchen counter, eat people food on the counter, pee and poop, scratch up the furniture, etc. They just do.

So the next day I wasn't looking for her but I found her. She looked and seemed fine. She recognized me and let me pet her and licked and bit me. So I felt good and felt like she was adapting to her new life and would be okay, so I didn't take her home. I fixed her a food and water area and fed her. Then the next two days she wasn't around. So then I felt bad that I didn't take her home. But today she's back and seems perfectly fine.

So, my question is...knowing that I really don't want an indoor cat at my house (I'm gone a lot with work and playing in a band and I don't want the cat pee smell in my house, and I don't want her scratching up my vintage amps) should I take the cat home with me?

We have had indoor cats for over 30 years. No problems. Never on tables, never scratch or wiz.
We have had ACFA breeders.

When you first get a cat make sure you have a squirt gun. It helps for jumping to inappropriate places or
pawing rugs or curtains.

The only time we had pee, was 20 years ago when parents had a fire and had to take in their cat. Our cats didnt
like it and did some marking of territory.

That is NOT normal cat behavior. If they 'pee everywhere' something ain't right:
maybe not enough litter boxes (should be 1 more than total # of cats).

maybe litter needs to be changed - litter boxes need to be cleaned every coupla days, not once a year

maybe medical issue(s)

If an indoor cat isn’t using the litter box, there’s a reason. First, the cat should be spayed/neutered. That prevents a male cat from marking everywhere…and if a male cat has marked around the litter boxes in the office, maybe that’s why the other cats weren’t using it. Cats that have been “fixed” live healthier, longer lives and are less prone to behavioral issues. Second, the litter box should be far away from its food bowl and water bowl. I see people that put the litter box only a couple of feet away…huh? Third, the litter box should be kept clean…duh. But also, the type of litter can be important. Some cats are finicky (duh) and also some litter can hurt their paws.

She always gets any new cat (or dog) spayed or neutered.

I've heard people say that, but it hasn't been my experience.
...Bet your boss's marriage doesn't survive....
One can only hope. However, she DID sign off on throwing the cats out. I think he wore her down.

We've had indoor cats for over 25 years now. none of them have ever pee'd anywhere in our homes or scratched anything. you can prevent the scratching thing by having scratching posts aroung the house. the only cats that "mark" their territory are ones that aren't neutered or spayed. we currently have 2 cats, 2 litter boxes that are cleaned twice a day.

your responsibility as a pet owner doesn't end with providing food and shelter. you are also required to look after their health and well being.

Take the cat home....

Have had cats forever -- NONE of them have went to the bathroom except in the litter box. And litter boxes need, as someone has pointed out, scooped every day. Adopt the cat, take her home, get a Vet checkup and all else that needs to be done. My cats have never touched my amps, they have scratching pads. You obviously care for the cat, and she, as you say, picked you.

I do not like cats, I think they posses all the issues of dogs and none of the loyalty or affection, and being t. gondii carriers doesn't help me warm to the idea either.

I just wanted to chime in and say that outdoor cats are an ecological disaster. Domestic cats are responsible for the extinction of a few dozen species... they are invasive apex predators that disrupt the native food chain. I understand why people keep them in barns, but they must absolutely be spayed/neutered at a bare minimum and ideally shouldn't be left to roam at all.

Say Yes to the Force and welcome your new feline overlord.
Great things happen when a cat gets to choose their Hooman.
Bogart - att below, wears the familiar notched ear of formerly feral felines.
He's a wonderful guest when he stays @our place. When he's home, the Himalayan salt lamp give an extra pink glow.

Most of you know that four of the five dogs I had till my family disintegrated were rescues.

I've fed a couple of stray dogs since then, but have been unable to approach much less connect. If I were to connect, I'd probably now have more dogs than just my Flash and Ava. (I'm not a good dog foster--I get too attached. Flash is the foster fail of a lifetime!)

If you're this attached to that cat, and you found each other again after a day of her being outdoors suddenly, you should secure her to safety at the very least. If you don't want the responsibility, try to find someone who will give her a forever home. The kitty cannot help her own circumstances. Good luck (and welcome your new feline overlord 😉. Dogs have people...cats have staff. 🤣)

Put yourself in the cat's place.
She has nobody else in this world.
She's been cast from a warm friendly home into the horror that is the outside for kitties.
There are so many things out there just waiting to kill or mangle her ...😿
If you can turn your back on her, turn in your human card.

That being said, I've had cats forever.
One didn't care about me at all, and one day decided to be my besty.
She got me through the excruciating emotional pain of a divorce.
The next one was a kitten so weak they put her in a box that checks came in to bury her.
She rallied and they bottle fed her.
I came in after fishing and sat down and she climbed up my leg into my lap and wouldn't leave.
Talk about love at first sight! She lived a good life and died of old age.
The next one we adopted. He was picked out by my son. He bonded with me.
We were so close ... until he got kidney disease.
I cried more for that little guy than for my own parents when they passed.😹
He left a kitty-sized hole in my heart ... until I found Dusty.🐈‍⬛
Dusty wakes me up purring every morning.
He frolics in the laundry while I fold it.
We take naps together and he sits on my lap when I watch TV.
He's my besty.😸🤠
I couldn't bear the thought of him being abandoned outdoors.

So I encourage you to bring Kitty home and give her a place to be safe.
Get her to the vet and make sure she has her shots, etc.
Ask the vet what food would be best for her.
Get her a litterbox and clean it DAILY.
Get her a couple of scratching posts.
And some treats and toys.

In the long run, you'll accumulate karma points galore.
And you'll earn a loyal friend who will repay your kindness with love every day. 😻

What’s the update ?! 😩😲
As of a week ago today she's disappeared. She seemed to have settled into her new surroundings and even appeared to be getting along with the other cats, which she never did before when she was an inside cat. So now I feel really bad and I guess I'll always wonder what happened to her. I messed up...
