    My two sons - both college age - have asked me to recommend some Smithereens tunes for them to check out. I recommended:

    (1) Only A Memory;
    (2) House We Used to Live In;
    (3) Behind the Wall of Sleep;
    (4) Top of the Pops; and
    (5) Something New.

    Chime in with any suggestions you'd add/prefer.

    Strangers When We Meet
    Drown in My Own Tears
    A Girl Like You
    Time Won't Let Me (cover of Outsiders song)

    And speaking of covers the Smithereens did an album of Beatles covers - Meet the Smithereens - and they covered the whole Tommy album.

    A 2nd vote for the entire “Especially for You” album.

    I would also suggest in addition to the tracks listed above:

    “Beauty and Sadness” - I would suggest trying to find the live version that was put out on a 6 song live EP in the late ‘80’s. It was from a NY concert that was shown on MTV back in the day (and was up on YouTube when I looked a couple years ago). I also think the EP is available on their website (not to be confused with the “Live in Concert: Greatest Hits and More” cd which is also great).

    “I Believe”
    “Room Without a View”

    "Meet The Smithereens" is a fave. It's a recreation of "Meet the Beatles" in true NJ style.

    They were a great band that deserves far more acclaim. RIP Pat Dinizio, an excellent songwriter and frontman. Here's one that haunts me. Such a wonderful melody.

    With Belinda Carlisle.

    Lots of good ones mentioned, I'd add Blood and Roses

    Blue Period is awesome, a fave for sure, for another in the haunting vein I'd suggest this

    I so love this band

    Producer, too. My band once sat down with Pat in a cafe on the LES and he told us the story of cutting early demos for Smashing Pumpkins. He did not remember the sessions fondly.

    I saw them a few years ago, before Pat passed. They still sounded great.

    I've had the pleasure of seeing the band play a bunch of times as well as meeting 'em; they were all 'normal' guys with incredible power-pop sensibilities. Their hooks are easily as good as anything invented by Keef Richards, Pete Townshend, or Joe Perry. Rock solid rhythm too. I've had a bunch of their tunes on set lists in bands over the years.

    The entire 11 album is a favorite of mine...but all their stuff is masterful.

    Pat Dinizio was a humble man with immense talent. Even as a youngster he had the voice that Elvis Costello took years to achieve as an older guy. And that's not a slam on Costello.

    Rest in peace, Pat.

    Be proud that both your sons have great taste in music. I recommend all the songs already mentioned. This was another band despite having opportunities to see them at small venues, I never went. That was a mistake.

    I'll second Blood and Roses, because it is a GREAT song, and it's the first Smithereens' song I ever heard. (MTV of course)
    Someone else mentioned Time Won't Let Me.....a terrific (and faithful) cover, recorded for the film Time Cop. Everything about the Smithereens was awesome, not only their music, but their down-to-earth attitudes and work ethic as well.
    R.I.P. Pat. :(

    Three things:

    (1) “A Girl Like You” is one of the best pop/rock songs in the history of pop/rock. I luuurve the rhythm guitar tone...

    (2) Somebody said that “The Smithereens is the band that formed after the Smiths exploded.” I thought that was a funny joke, but it has nothing to do with this thread.

    (3)
    From everything I’ve seen and read, any interactions with Billy Corgan that last longer than a few milliseconds don’t lead to fond memories. There’s a reason the word “organ” is in his name...I’ll let you figure out which organ I’m referring to (hint: it’s not Hammond, Rhodes or internal)

    1986 "originals" band I was in did a few covers, very few, among those being, behind the wall of sleep & blood & roses.
