Failure to bow and genuflect is not the same as hate. I don't think anyone said the kids doesn't have chops. What I'm seeing his that people don't think is playing is musical.

And I'm sure all these guys criticizing him are experts on "musicality."

When I go to a visual art museum and look at an image or object... I have never once thought, "yeah, this is beautiful and all... but if they happened to paint it really quickly, that would make it even more beautiful."

Some people do think like that (up to them), but like the take on 'The Chicken' video above... speed--for me--doesn't impart an improvement on Jaco's (much slower) version. Feels like music meant primarily to impress musicians, and for this guy, that's usually always a turn off.

You can always count on TDPRIers to tell you what they DON'T like.

I remember hearing Antoine's first record of F-A Moerman's tunes. It's gratifying to see him become such an incredible and intelligent player. Big thumbs up.

One of the things that amazes me about Matteo's playing is how rhythmically precise his technique is. To me, the flamenco kings are the pinnacle of the guitar world, but they're like the Himalaya -- I know I'll never go there, so I let it be Everest all by itself. But Mancuso, man, he lets one of those passages fly, and fly, and holy smokes he's still flying, and I go, that sh*t is just THRILLING, like the feeling you get when the plane lifts up off the ground. Young men should let it rip. I'm all for it.

Besides, what do young people know about life, love, and poetry?

    :p

Maybe more appropriate for a TDPRI crowd...

I met my guitar mortality when I first heard Al DiMeola in 1978 while I was in college. It was a terrifying, life-changing look into the eyes of a speed I would never have.

I've been immunized. You can no longer scare me with fast fingers.

Al is one of my favorites, too! And this song is amazing. He's the first guitarist that made me say, "I'll never be able to play like that". And he also taught me that you can be amazingly musical AND frighteningly fast at the same time.

As I said in a previous thread about this young fellow, his technique is obviously fantastic. But once you've seen him do his thing, it's just not that fun to listen to. May I have your permission to hold this opinion without being labeled a 'hater'?

The single most terrifying guitar player I've ever spoken to. I wrote several pieces for Guitar World back in 2007, and was asked to interview Seagal by phone, as he was promoting his new blues album. It felt like speaking to General Jack D. Ripper from Dr. Strangelove or Col. Kurtz from Apocalypse Now. I kept waiting for him to say, “I watched a snail crawl along the edge of my Stratocaster. That’s my dream. That’s my nightmare. Crawling, slithering, along the edge of a Stratocaster … and surviving.”

Fortunately, I survived as well. At least I think I did.

That is so rock and roll (but I like it, like it, etc), my Keith fandom just went up by quite a bit.

Josh is the king of that kind of "fan interaction" in my view, and is a large enough man to back it up, I'd guess. Lots of language below.

Buckethead is terrifying. He's solidly in uncanny valley territory, since no one would really be surprised if he removed the bucket and mask to reveal a well oiled guitar-bot.
