I have become fascinated by the seventies all girl band, the Runaways. Lita Ford and Sandy West were as good a musician at 16 as a lot of grown men of that era. Their music was simplistic, but no more so than some of the three-chord rock played by male bands at the same time. What is more interesting was what they grew up to be. They were cute and sexy when they were young, but they became beautiful and talented women. I guess Joan Jett was the most famous and successful of them all. If you are interested, Lita Fords book “Living like a Runaway” and Cherie Currie’s “Neon Angel” make for entertaining reading. As you would expect, there is much sex, drugs and even rock and roll.

I was fascinated by them as a kid when they started but I must admit that it was mainly because of their appearance. Have you seen the movie about the group with Kristen Stewart as Joan Jett? It is interesting to see how the group came together. The movie is simply called The Runaways.

My favorite song is Queens of Noise”. Here is Lita Ford and Cherie Currie all grown up, wearing it out.

Yes, it is a pretty good movie. There is a documentary called Edge play, that explains a lot about the band. Including interviews with most of the members.

And Cherie and the drummer from Fanny have a current project, so you get to have both at once.

    Cheers,

Fanny put out a new single recently, under the name 'Fanny Walked The Earth.'

    Always like June Millington's style.

Sandy West was a great drummer and only wanted to rock. Sad story for her when the Runaways broke up.

I was always secretly pleased that Joan Jett and I both played goldtop Les Paul Deluxes. I could fantasize that if we ever found ourselves at the same party, I'd have a conversation opener.

I saw them in '76 at the Roundhouse, on a bill with the Troggs. At the time, they seemed to be a gimmick band assembled by a Hollywood producer. They were OK but, aside from the obvious visual thing of appearing like barely-legal teenage runaway girls, there wasn't much substance there. Of course, much the same could be said for the Troggs (except for the barely-legal teenage girl bit), who were well past their prime by this time. The Damned opened the show, and were the hit of the evening for me.

She mostly plays melody makers now . That must be a very old picture. Joan has not dyed her hair black yet . And I think that was the first bass player. She didn't last too long. She was replaced by Jackie Fox .

I saw them at the Agora in Cleveland in 1976. In fact - I looked it up - last Friday July 19 was the 43rd anniversary of that show. Damn, I am very old!

I learned from subsequent reading and the documentary Edgeplay that the band took themselves seriously, but the marketing for the tour I saw was all about the gimmick of a band of teenaged girls who performed in lingerie. It seemed like the local radio played Cherry Bomb for a few weeks and then they were gone.

Joan and Lita are still actively touring. I assume Cherie and Brie Darling will be touring to support their new album.

There is a Video of the Bangles playing "Queens of Noise". The lead singer for the Bangles had amazing eyes, she could sing pretty good too .
