Very much enjoyed, and I'm not any kind of chess enthusiast - but a window into that world was pretty interesting.

Threadjumpers! Ok, because, curiosity, I checked the Johnny-come-latelys and nobody started it better than @Torren61 !

It's inevitable, however, just part of the scenery; like some other craziness that raised it's head - in a thread about a movie/series about chess. Go figure.

...now fear of redheads? that could be based on real experience. Stalemate?

I was being satyrical or sarcastic or something else clever because when something big happens, there is usually a plethora of multi threads, lol. I have a date stamp so we know exactly who is the "Coke" here. The others are just RC Cola and that no name brand from Costco, lol.

Brilliant. A series about Chess. Could somebody tell me in which episode they sign up Howlin' Wolf to the label - I can skip straight to it then.

You don't HAVE to watch it but remember when you said "I don't LIKE green eggs and ham!"? (Turned out later that he LOVES green eggs and ham...)

    House of cArds ?

Give credit where credit was due. My wife has always thought that Kevin Spacey was a total and complete creep.

When all that stuff came out she said “of course - I’ve been saying that for 10 years“.

Plus, if his character is anything like that YouTube Christmas message he gave after he was popped from his kitchen, I think he might’ve been carving a turkey and looking straight into the camera ?

no thanks. No thanks. No thanks...

    Back to the Queen's Gambit...

We watched it last weekend, and really enjoyed it. I read Kasparov was one of the consultants to make sure all the moves played were real and made sense.

Back to Queen's Gambit - I really liked it. Great cast, great acting, the music was appropriate and cool, it looked right. The focus of the series is what it feels like to be an outsider/geek with uncanny skill at something, they really captured that well.

Just finished the first episode and trying to find excuses for not sitting right here and binge watching the rest. Loved every minute of it.

Netflix has its share of misses, but when it hits, it hits the bullseye. Glad to be alive in the era of good television at last, because I remember when it was s**t.

It looked great and then started me down this road of a depressed drug controlled orphan and heck , I just don’t need the darkness. Looking for a show that is complex and innovative, witty without excessive sex, violence, raunchy language and dark motives. I want to disappear into a show and not feel the anxiety of the characters and heck even feel better about the world after watching it.
I’ll stick to a Jean Claude Van Johnson and old Dr. Who.

    Minor spoiler alert, I suppose:

Here's the thing about that, though. Gambit doesn't go overboard on it. Yes, there's some darkness there, but it's, as you put it, "complex and innovative." They could have resorted to a LOT of darkness; abuse at the orphan's home, abuse by the new adoptive family, cheating by the chess establishment, on and on. Made Beth a victim. But they didn't (beyond, of course, the not-so-subtle marginalization of women in that timeframe and, even at that, they didn't overplay it). They focused instead on her own demons and their sources, giving her alone the blame/credit for how the game played out. That restraint made the series exceptional for me.

That and I found I simply could not take my eyes off of her. A fascinating young lady to observe, especially late in the series. Anya Taylor-Joy was perfectly cast and completely mesmerizing.

    All-in-all, a beautifully done show.

Enjoyed it. But for a show with so much narrative style and mood, it dove right into 'traditional competition (Sport) movie' in the last episode. I liked it, but it didn't seem have to the 'cool' or strength of the earlier episodes.

I agree. If I had a quibble with it, it would be over the fairly conventional ending. Good call.

The Bluesman here is right, and very well stated. Couldn’t agree more. And yes, Anya Taylor-Joy is incredible and amazing to look at. Seriously, I found it impossible not to stare at that face. And while it’s not a happy go lucky type of show the ending of it made me smile.
