I've gotten a message on my phone that the money from my EDD account is frozen because of a hold on my B of A credit card. I don't have a B of A card I also haven't applied for unemployment insurance. The first time I got the message, it said I was owed 700 bucks and some change, another said 600 bucks and some change. Since I didn't bite, they decided to up the ante to $2100! Surely that will be enough to get me to cough up my personal info. Thing is that the California Unemployment office is sending their text from Richmond Virginia! Whuuuut?

Just send all of your money to me over here in the UK. I'll look after for you. Just think how much easier it would be not to have to worry about these things.

I make no charge for this service. You're welsome.

:)
If I send ALL of my money to you, you'll have enough money to buy a secondhand tin whistle. ;)

The scary thing is, it obviously works often enough to make doing this worthwhile to the scammers.

You can run an ad on Craigslist here in Bakersfield, that says LOCAL sale only. Within ten minutes you'll get a half dozen hits from the east coast, saying "is the "item" still being available?" If so, I will having my personal carrier picking it up, I will giving you ten times the asking price, and you refunding me how much I paying you too much. Please include it you account number when replying to my code I will be send you to make sure you not robot.

I seem to attract scammers. Yesterday, I got a text from someone claiming to be associated with a company I'm subscribed to wanting setup my auto pay and send me my I.D. Card. I have already paid in full, and already have my card.

My favorite, father in law almost died laughing and wife just stared at us like we were kids.

Some lady inquiring about auto insurance. I used my best fake hillbilly voice explaining I had an older 1987 F-150. When she asked for the VIN I kindly informed her that the cops took it as evidence when me and Leroy were running the shine. But I do have a 1995 Honda civic behind the barn.

She proceeded to inform me that they can help cover that one! Just asked for my drivers license number. I shyly admitted I don’t remember the number off hand. She said she can wait while I looked. I had to inform her that Deputy Collins took my license last month when I got caught stealing copper.

She paused and said “oh. So you don’t have a license?” I informed her she was incorrect. I DO have one. But the Deputy took it. She replied saying to have insurance I need a valid license. To that I informed her if she called back tomorrow about this time, that I’d have one. She asks “oh so you are getting it reinstated?”

I replied “um….. no… Jr. Will make me a new one for $100.” She quickly hung up.

When those guys would call wanting to sell me virus protection, I would tell them I already had my flu shot for the year. They would say, no, no for your computer. I would then tell them I didn't have a computer. They'd say everyone has a computer, I would say, if we have one, it's my wife's and she's not here right now. I would offer to look for it, usually though, they would hang up before I found it.

That's really sad to hear and I hope this get straightened out quickly. It's terrible, but the scam you refer to is very widespread, I mean like hundreds of millions of people of all incomes widespread. Hackers or scammers will buy tools to steal cc#s or just buy or sell the numbers by the thousands on the dark web and start making tiny purchases at huge scale. Most people ignore the first ones ("is it really worth calling the bank and waiting on hold after being transferred three times to contest $1.18 purchase")? Well, $1.18 X 1,000,000 every day is a lot of money to the scammers. They then do exactly what happens to you, upping the ante until the charges are contested. The banks almost always refund the money (I hope that is what happens for you) and write it off. And then the whole process starts all over again.

This may be obvious, so sorry if I'm stating the obvious, but i figured it may help to share the detail so when you see the $1.18 charge, you have a reminder that it's probably a good idea to clear it up fast it up and have a new card sent. Your cc# is for sale, or sold or both, and it's likely it's more than just you cc#

Before anyone reply's that this is yet another tinfoil hat ramble about on line security, just know that I am not particularly smart but I happen to know quite a bit about banking and technology, and I have personally seen this hit people very hard, and I've also seen some other really brutal consequences from complacency or lack of knowledge of what's going on and what you can do about it. It's not going away anytime soon and statistically it's near certainty that if you have a credit card, it will happen to you.

I haven't a card like they are referring to. I don't have a pending claim with the EDD, nor did I give them any info. You're right though, we have just within the past six months had a banking problem we finally got resolved. It was not an easy task, but we came out okay in the end. ALL because we did something kind, we sent a granddaughter a check in the mail as a graduation present. The mail was stolen, and the problems began.
