Well, this is probably one of the nineties' most iconic guitars but for many years it was unknown who owned this modified 1965 Fender Jaguar before Cobain acquired it.

This Fender Kurt Cobain signature model shows the mods to good effect: a toggle switch, double cream dimarzio humbuckers, a Gibson ABR tune-o-matic and a triple pot set up.

Now when Cobain bought it, it came with all the mods already in place and with a fairly hefty roadcase with the price, it was obviously a serious professional musician's main axe. But exactly who owned that guitar before has been a Mystery.

And I think I figured out who owned it prior to Cobain: Guitarist Martin Jenner, who played with both Cliff Richard and the Everly Brothers

Jenner is seen playing it around the 5;21 minute mark and even from the quality of the footage you can clearly make out, the toggle switch, the double cream humbuckers and the triple pot set up.

That simply cannot be a coincidence, Cobain's Jaguar was Martin Jenner's.

Well I watched the full video and noticed two things, one that could say "nah it's not the one" and the other that says "No mistaking it!"

The first detail, the one that casts doubt: Jenner's guitar has block inlays and a big headstock, Cobain's doesn't but that could mean that it had its neck replaced at some time.

The other detail that confirms it:
Note how in this picture that it has a second strap button on the lower bout, later on in the concert Footage you can see that Jenner straps the guitar from the lower bout. Probably to improve the guitar's balance.

    So to summarize:
    - Twin cream colored humbuckers
    - Strap button on the lower bout
    - Three pot control set up
    - Toggle switch where the slider switches sat.
    - Tune O matic bridge.

    We have a match here.

Those modifications are too unique, even without the neck I agree. What a laugh! Kurt's guitar was veteran of the blue rinse circuit!

If Cobain were to be told that he'd probably laugh, it's such a twisted tale. Going from holy spirit gospel to Grunge.

Just saw this thread, I bought my lefty ES-175 from Martin Jenner here in Perth in 1997, but he didn't mention the Cobain connection unfortunately.

I'm not sure that I could have made it to 5:21 of 'Christmas with Cliff Richard'. Great detective work! Was it a chance sighting or did some clues lead you there?

BTW - I've played 3 of those roadworn KC Jag's at the various GC's around here and they were all great guitars.

    Worth the money ?

Maybe for someone but it violates my "no bolt-together guitars are worth more than $500" by more than double so - not for me.

Fascinating detective work Blazer - I wonder where he bought it ?

It was seeing a few seconds of concert footage of Cliff Richard on a documentary about the history of the British chart shows, that made me go "Hang on is that?" since I noticed that the guitar Jenner was holding had three pots.

So I started to look up all the guitarists that Cliff had in his band and singled out the one who was left handed, came up with the name Martin Jenner, looked up footage and I hit paydirt.

I mailed my finding to the British guitar mag Guitar and bass and to Fender but I haven't heard back from either.

Awesome find. It was Cobain who got me into playing guitar in middle school!

Awesome. So how did NME and these other sites find this thread? Did you notify them too in addition to Fender. Great work Blazer!

If you want some cheap amusement, watch the Cliff Richard video on mute while listening to Nirvana.

"Rape Me" is pretty good with those matching blue outfits and dance routines.
