I’ll tell you, I went to that fancy music school in Boston (and still have the student loans in my 50s to prove it) and of all the things I learned there, one of the most profound classes I took was a Motown ensemble class where we dissected the arrangements on all these classic songs. They were done so quickly and they are so clever, it’s incredibl.
Being Berklee, we were blessed with an abundance of guitar players (every ensemble had more guitar players than they knew what to do with back then) and I was there as a bass player. The craft of those 3 guitar Motown arrangements made a strong impression on me. The way they used different tones and voicings and it never sounded cluttered has continued to impact my playing ever since. Even in a one guitar setting, like I am mostly in these days, my instinct is to avoid playing in the same register as the lead vocal and I know I got that from that class. Plus, learning that repertoire was such a worthwhile songwriting education.
