Gospel as I think of it: I guess poor Black Southern church music done well enough for some city slicker to roll tape?
As essential to the great American musics as Blues, or inseparable from those American music origins.

I fall into the group that fits the walkin in Memphis line: "Man I am tonight"!
No need to have a mean mean woman in order to dig the Blues either, and hell, got no proof one way or the other...

At times I just have to sing out "Oh Happy Day/ when Jesus washed".
Or a couple of others including an obscure "Im gonna sit down at the welcome table".

This is a trope, and inaccurate.
It was a lot more constructed and calculated in it's creation than people assume, and the people who created it had agency and power, even if not enough.
