The other day someone discovered that I play guitar, and asked me to play something.

I froze. I realized that I can play a lot of songs in a band situation, but I don't have anything that immediately comes to mind when asked to "play something." I finally decided on Little Sister, but by then, the conversation had moved on. I also realized that "play something" usually means "sing something."

Do you have a "go-to" song for those moments when someone asks you to play something?

Offhand, "Gentle on My Mind", "He Stopped Loving Her Today", "Walk Away", or sometimes "Crawdad". All those are always as ready to go as they're going to get.

Ok, I wait until I've got my audience pretty warmed up before I start goofing with that one. I might do Hey Joe. Honky Tonk Woman. Something (Beatles). Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay. Something like that. I remember once being a on George Michael kick. Great party music. Now, if I'm hanging with serious guitar players, I break out The Dance of Maya. And lately if they're just musicians, I go with So What, and play as much of the solos as I can remember, and everybody laughs when I finally forget how it goes. It's like memorizing digits of pi.

And seriously, every guitar player needs a song. You know, something that a non-guitar player would recognize as music. I don't always do the same one, but I always have one.

When someone asks me to play, I ask them how they are feeling. Then I improvise something that I believe will resonate with their answer. One thing I never do is regurgitate someone else’s music.

    For me:
    The Weight
    Layla (acoustic)
    Folsom Prison
    Amie

I agree though, unless you’re playing for a bunch of TDPRI geeks like us, you need to be able to sing while accompanying yourself on an acoustic to impress anyone.

I have yet to meet someone who can't instantly recognize a Tom Petty tune.

Also, dust in the wind played fingerstyle is easy, but makes you sound like you know what you're doing.

Wanted dead or alive is another good one for that. Easy peasy.

Acoustic, it's always Stones version of "Love in Vain." I can actually play that one pretty well.

    Sleepwalk- Personal favorite

Stand by me- Everyone knows it

Not fade away- I can't really sing AND play yet, so I like stuff that alternates: sing, play, sing, play.

Just me playing an acoustic guitar and my voice?
    Too easy.

In order, with no band behind me and no music stand nor lyrics sheets, strictly from memory:

I Can See Clearly Now - Johnny Nash
Wake Up As Some Other Guy - Original blues
    Everybody's Talking - Harry Nilssen
Blue Blue Dawn - Original blues

and if they still want more,

Boogie Shoes - KC and the Sunshine Band
Out On The Weekend - Neil Young
    Isn't It A Pity - George Harrison

If I am playing an acoustic it is usually Over the Hills and Far Away.

It's totally dependent on what's in my head at that moment. It could be anything.

I have quite a few things I recorded in my home studio, along with a bunch of recordings of my old bar band, on my phone. I just whip out the phone and let them hear that stuff.
