Thanks for the reminder. I really enjoyed this CD back in the mid 90s but hadn't listened to it recently. For anyone who doesn't know he's the son of Lonesome Dove novelist/sceenwriter Larry McMurtry. His writing heritage really comes through in his lyrics.

One of my favorite songwriters, with a great and unique sound to go along with it (as opposed to those great lyricists that slap music to their words).

He and I will never have a beer together, which is perfectly fine with both of us.

I’ve enjoyed his music over the years...Last year he came thru town and did a show at our local theatre...great show but he don’t smile...
I remember someone shouted out a song request and he said “I won’t tell you how to do your job if you don’t tell me how to do mine”...

He is kinda known for having a generally pissy disposition. One of our other forum members openef for him and was heard to say something like, "Who are these nobodys?"

Hi Hoodster! Thank you for the treat. I find a lot of new (to me) music on TDPRI and this is one to like. I started getting deep into country in the early 2000's and with the rise of music specifically marketed to kids, I'm finding more to like going back in time. Thanks again.

I'm a big fan, got to see him live last year and i've never seen a performer interact less with the crowd, surly wouldn't cover it. He still impressed the heck out of me.

Don’t you think there is something false about constantly pandering to your audience?
I do.
Let em’ love you, or not based on the merits of your art/music.
Good on him for that.
The greatest artists never beg, IMO.
Who he is shines through what he writes.

Yes I'm drunk but damn you're ugly
Tell you one thing yes I will
Tomorrow morning I'll be sober
You'll be just as ugly still

From "Red Dress"

Not his lyrics, but I can't imagine anyone else delivering them with the same attitude

McMurty is always on heavy rotation in my Amazon music list when I’m driving. His songs work great for the road.

My father in law was born and raised in Levelland, and he’s also a huge McMurtry fan. When we go on a trip with him and the kids he always says, “strap the kids in give em a little bit o Benadryl”

Ya know James McMurtry is known for his lyrics, but he is actually a pretty great guitarist too.

Texas State in San Marcos is home to the Larry McMurtry library and museum. It kind of makes me wonder when someone will open the James McMurtry museum and library. (Maybe at San Antonio College?)
