Hard to beat James Brown or Dr. John. This Bill Withers song is pretty funky.

    Jerry Garcia w/Merl Saunders!

As funky as it gets! Crazy psychedelic blues funk guitar! At his best Garcia could play man!

Troglodyte by the Jimmy Castor bunch. Maybe not the funkiest, but still one of my favorites.

This comes to mind right away, even though it's probably more appropriately categorized as "proto-funk." I am sure I could think of some competition if I put my mind to it. But when I hear "funk," this is pretty much the first thing that goes to mind.

That's a terrific band - Maceo has an amazing musical CV, and it shows!

Stevie Wonder was and is an all time great for me but as far as 1970s, my dorm room neighbor Leo's dad owned a club in Milwaukee, and a friend of his folks owned a club in Chicago. They gave me lessons kind of like knowing who Bob Marley is but meeting a girl my age and escaping the Jamaican resort while our parents and siblings were sleeping.

My 1970s dorm floor friends introduced me to this more than Stevie Wonder as funk, and being into a lot of great music they considered R&B, I considered funky, and others went to the disco.

Now this made me wonder where those guys from the dorm floor are today.

    :)
