The other thing... Kroc buys his way out of the original legal agreement with the McDonald's brothers... by swamping them in legal fees... then when he finally sits down to renegotiate the contract, the McDonald's brothers agree to the whole deal, and ask for 1% of gross proceeds for their family, in perpetuity. Kroc agrees verbally, but then leaves it out of the contract. When the brothers bring it to his attention, he acts surprised and says, "Can't we just agree to it with a handshake?" The brothers agree with a handshake. And the historical fact is that the McDonald family never saw one penny of it. Ever.

There was (and still is) a Tastee Freeze in my hometown. It was a fun, jumping spot with good ice cream. It was the best teen hangout in my small town.

In the early 70s, mcDonalds build right next door in an effort to kill the competition. 50 years later, the Tastee Freeze is still there, with a vacant lot where the McDonalds used to be.

Not to be out done, McDonald's build 2 new restaurants on each side if the main highway through town. Killed of many local restaurants.

Great movie, Michael Keaton was perfect, as was whathisname from Parks and Rec. The detail was fascinating and in the end the Ray Kroc character just creeped me out.

I have to say I rooted for him at first, classic Death of a Salesman kind of guy.

Terrific flick about a true parasite.

The Hollywood word you're looking for is anti-hero. And you're right, Kroc wasn't any kind of hero. Just a disgusting human being who got rich selling obesity and heart disease to the world.

If you run a restaurant that gets killed off by McDonalds, you weren't meant to survive.

Ray Kroc was a small time hustler compared to the masters...

the good coming from evil idea I struggle with. Microsoft, when run by Bill Gates (similar to Mark Zuckerberg's fortune) was borne from deceit, fraud and exploitation. Almost EVERY single country on the planet successfully sued Microsoft for illegal and unethical behavior, the fines were expansive but not enough to stop their behavior, they saw it as a tax. In the end, Gates ended up one of the richest people on the planet and now his wife leads his charitable activities, many of which benefit people. BUT, at what cost? The amount of good done now with the monies that were effectively stolen from people are TINY compared to not ripping people off.

These kinds of frauds are so huge and so expansive that most folks cannot wrap their heads around the con job that has been worked on them.

Businessmen have been trying to buy their way into heaven since Carnegie.

Long before Carnegie, in fact. The "Church" in Medieval times sold "indulgences". (forgiving sins) Just nowadays it's done by "charitable, non-profits", with the Public Relations people making sure everyone knows about it.

I'm kinda sad that it comes as no surprise to me that the world's worst polluter and manipulator of the planet's food distribution ecosystem also just happened to be a giant douche.
True but...ultimately it’s on us, the consumer for supporting them.

Michael Keaton is capable of doing good dramatic work as opposed to silly comedic stuff.

I believe his best work was portraying James Angleton in the mini series for cable about the CIA named The Company.

And our cores, we are all slimy people. It's just that we're not famous enough to have movies made about us. And the "other guy" is always worse than us, according to... ourselves.

You can corner the market on Calvin if you want to. I don't think that that is true at all. I've known many fantastic people who are nothing like the swill who have done terrible things for fame and fortune... this would be like taking a 200 pt continuum and saying if you are on it, you are equal, which is absurd.
