This is what I was gonna say. I certainly prefer having the option of a neck pickup, but I'm also a big of gear that gives you no vestigial options. If I didn't use the neck pickup, I'd want it gone.

I can sort of see where he's coming from with the Esquire, and why someone might not put it in the same category as a Junior. A Les Paul Junior is very different from your average Les Paul standard (with humbuckers and maple cap): different construction, different pickups, different sound and a very different price and vibe. Juniors are fairly famous in their own right, and no one will think of it as a Les Paul without a neck pickup. Someone might call it a Special without a neck pickup, but Specials aren't very famous either...

An Esquire really is a Telecaster without a neck pickup (it's even routed for a neck pickup for goodness' sake!). Price, sound, construction and vibe are either similar or identical.
Add to this that the telecaster is extremely well known, while an Esquire is a bit of a niche instrument for poeple like us on this forum.

I still think Esquires are very cool (and KevinB's is particularily lovely to look at, nice!), but at the end of the day I don't believe there's much you can do with an Esquire that you couldn't also do with a Tele.

Well, I’m apparently losing on multiple fronts, so I’ll show all y’all what I purchased to cover both bass and lead in a band about 15-20 years ago:

It sounds good, but it is heavy. Full maple body. No neck dive, but a Comfort Strapp is required.

Oh, yeah... I also own a Steinberger Spirit GT-PRO and a Steinberger Spirit 4-string bass. All of them punch well above their price class.

You make a good point but I think it's more correct to say that a Telecaster is really an Esquire with an added neck pickup!

Esquires appeared in 1950, while the Telecaster was brought out in 1951. Oh, and there were also a few Esquires made with two pickups.

I couldn’t find the authors name. I’m a bit conflicted. I’d like to tell him how much I laughed at his article but I know it’s not appropriate to make fun of someone who is obviously mentally challenged.

I'm sure it's great music, but I've been playing guitar since '87 and have listened to a lot of guitarists and never heard of that guy.

I'll have to agree to disagree with the list.

The only guitars I don't think anyone should by are counterfeit guitars.

    A little double neck fun

I love the BC Rich. I love BC Rich in general. Full House and John was one of my influences. John played the brand the first 4 seasons. That is how I new of the brand.

Disagree about the Esquire for sure...

Half-disagree about the double-neck, after seeing Gordy Johnson with his band Grady. Slide playing on an open-tuned 12-string needs to be experienced at least once in every life.

the only guitar I generally would say avoid is the one purchased on impulse.

The Esquire shouldn't be included in that group.
