Off a chair or not, its still good elevation for a man of his age. Cool in my book if only for that reason.

The only person being discussed at that point was Waits.

Cool, is a matter of perspective. Interpreted in the eye of the beholder.

Meh... We all fixed things back in the day. I still do, but it's getting harder to fix everything before my wife can throw it away; it breaks so much more often.

I get the whole tortured artist thing and I understand that Waits connects with people on many levels but I have never "gotten" him. He is not the epitome of cool to me.

I've never seen him as the tortured artist type, he's witty and charismatic and a hell of a songwriter. But doesn't come across as tortured, or even like he's trying to.

    Can you elaborate?

Nah, it's not that important. I deduced it from watching "The Heart of Saturday Night" from 1975 on YouTube. Suffice to say if he's not a tortured artist, then I really don't get him, because to me he's unlistenable.

Cool is making it all look effortless. But only rubes, marks, fools, and certain varieties of fan actually believe it's effortless.

I went back and re read it, and I think you're right.

    I apologize.

I guess I wasn't expecting someone to say Tom couldn't play. But on another board, a fellow in his 40s did not know who Levon Helm was, so I guess one never can tell.

Of the currently very active performers, the coolest would IMO have to be Paul Weller:
