We have once again demonstrated the dynamics of perceived coolness. The degree of coolness in my perception is inversely proportional to the degree of non-coolness in everyone else's perception.

Ok. Maybe I didn't need that extra cup of coffee.

As a kid I thought Fonzie was the epitome of cool.
Didn't take me to long to figure out this "cool dude" was just a high school drop out grease money with a bike. Yeah I'm sure he spent the 60s, 70s and 80s working on all the "nerd's" cars. At the end of the day he drove his Honda (a Hog on a grease monkeys pay? um no) back to the trailer park and spent his nights with canned beer and a fat old lady bitching about.... well he'd tuned out the bitching by around 65.
    He hung himself in 92.

Fonzie should have learned to play guitar.

    Yup.

I'm always waiting for Tom to slip up and accidentally sing like Debbie Boone.

An obsolete (even in the Fifties) Knucklehead Harley, then a Triumph. Not impossible.

Speaking as a dropout grease monkey with a bike, I'm wondering what it is it that you are resenting.

Can't tell if you're serious, did you notice the chair on the left.

On this the J-Man and I agree, most of us would have to live a few lifetimes to achieve Tom Waits cool and then, it's doubtful.

Saw Tom live the first time in the early 70's. More cool than you could imagine.

    What songs did he sing?

(if i understand epitome, it's not just one thing or person, it's the degree of a quality that thing or that person possesses)

Depends on who the guy is and one's knowledge of the guy and the junk.

Tom uses some of that junk to perform and some as preamps in recording.

    So, yup.

I love Tom Waits. I thought you were talking about the picture itself.

I thought it was cool that he played Renfield.

    Okay everyone, define cool.

If someone does an amazing trick on a surfboard, people will exclaim, "Wow! That was cool."
Is that the same kind of cool as Lauren Bacall in To Have and Have Not - "You know how to whistle don't ya, Steve?"
Is an old Triumph motorbike the same kind of cool as seeing the Shuttle touch down?
It's cool when famous people help out in a soup kitchen. Robert Mitchum is cool when he smokes a cigarette.
So, what the heck does cool mean?
