one thing i hagve in common with them is...my mirror in the bathroom
That song MADE Grosse Point Blanke. Tied everything together, like Lebowski's rug.
Wonderful stuff, remember it well, glad to see they're still going.
Two versions of the band these days - Dave’s version ( he’s based in the USA so usually touring as The English Beat) and Roger’s version (touring as The Beat). I’ve seen both in the last couple of years. Dave has all the stories and the charm and Roger’s version is more the upbeat energetic version of the band.
Roger’s version earlier this year.
OP creating the set? Needs threads for FYC, Fun Boy Three, some others I'm forgetting for sure.
Love me some EB
There is a cross Atlantic thread here ( according to the Panter book)- Our Lips are Sealed was written by Terry Hall and a GoGo ( Jane...?) when The Specials supported them in the USA and it was released here and was a hit for The Fun Boy Three and in the USA by the GoGos.
To complete the post 2Tone set you might include The Fine Young Cannibals who were mostly former members of The (English) Beat. I think it’s Andy Cox ( The Beat and FYC and a one hit wonder as a solo artist) at the back of the stage in a hat in that picture Southpole posted, although I’m not 100% sure. And General Public who had most of the rest of The Beat and a Special.
The Selecter were always the also ran band of 2 Tone but they have kept releasing fresh material and are a great live band ( ok it’s two original members and some session people). Gangsters started The Specials thread and the B side of that was The Selecter by The Selecter so a version of them was there from the beginning ( it’s an instrumental and pre Pauline Black joining the band). Pauline Black’s biography is an interesting read, although don’t particularly expect to like her afterwards.
I really liked this cover they did, to their credit removed from sale when Amy popped her clogs:
[ and, yes, I know a lot of pointless crap about 2Tone. For example, Elvis Costello released his first single on the 2Tone label as did Madness before moving on]
Jane Wiedlin, yup. My FYC was for Fine Young Cannibals.
Ahh, completely missed your FYC - another senior moment
Have seen the Wakeling version a number of times the past 10+ years. Still having fun.
Didnt I read Dave & Roger were touring as 1 this year?
Sadly, Saxa passed away a year ago.
One of my favorite bands.
Before we got MTV where I lived, I would go to a friends house on Fri.
nights as I knew they would play the video of "Mirror in the Bathroom"
in the mix of videos that night.
There was a show on VH1 called "Bands Reunited" that had them as
one of the groups to reunite. Good episode.
Great post. Bad Manners are still touring as well.
Always liked this one.
The English Beat play around here a few times a year, often at the Belly Up Tavern.
I saw the original line up when I was at University in Bristol in England in 1980. I recall they were supported by an all girl band called The Dolly Mixtures. That was a great night.
I also saw The Specials, Selector, Secret Affair, Bad Manners, The Lambrettas and The Jam at the height of the 1980s Mod Revival.
Great, great times!
That backdrop takes me right back to the Two Tone tour at Leicester De Montfort hall in about 1978! The Beat, Selector, Specials. And skinheads fighting on the dancefloor.
Can't hear 'Ranking Full Stop' enough.
Saw them in 83. Blockhead on sax as Saxa wasn't touring with them.
Pretty sure it was 1979 as I saw the same tour in Bristol in the November of that year.
It was my first year at Uni so I remember it well.
