and we have a gig at Cafe Smitten here in Bakersfield this Friday.

First Friday here is always a play for free gig at a coffee house, on the sidewalk, in front of the music store. The listeners are a steady flow, and since we’re mostly retired, getting paid or not is unimportant. Two hours of frivolity and hitting the Millennials with Bob Wills, Leon Russell, Grateful Dead, Hot Tuna, Stones, Santo and Johnny, Buddy Holly, Ry Cooder is always a treat.

The drummer, Lumpy, called me and said his groin was swollen after a rather vigorous massage. Next morning, he had a tennis ball sized hernia. Recently moved from Bakersfield to LA, he diesnt have a primary doctor yet. I suggested duct tape and under armor.

We will see if the gig really happens.

Having recently recovered from a hernia, getting briefs a size too small while waiting for the doc can help.
Good thing to get surgically fixed , miserable first couple of weeks afterwards though.

"Vigorous massage" eh, makes perfect sense, any drummers I know, damn sure wouldn't get a hernia from a "vigorous" load in/load out.

You can get a hernia truss at most pharmacys.

I had to wear one for 8 months waiting for the surgery.

Lumpy the drummer made the gig.

    His compression shorts worked great.

We were outside the cafe under the suspended sunshade as the rain began. The set list was soaked. I put the gig bag atop my amp to keep the water off. The pedal steel player kept toweling if his instrument.

Luckily, we had a fun time with an attentive cried of geezers like us and a younger crowd that hadn’t heard much electric music. The waitress told me it’s usually solo guitar singers. She loved us.

    And, we got paid.
