I wrote this song. I was 20. Mild Grateful Dead fan at best. NOT a fan of country music at the time.
Anyway, I recorded it recently. Hope you like it.

I was working at a pro color film lab part time over that summer. The day he died a few of the other workers were devastated and they blasted GD all day and most of the week around the darkrooms and studios. Had seen the Dead at least 10 times as they toured a lot around the San Francisco Bay Area the previous 5-10 years and an ex-girlfriend really liked them. Plus I smoked tons of weed then and the GD and weed go together very very well. I liked them but not a huge fan (Estimated Prophet and Uncle John’s Band FTW!).

Nice job on this song. I like it a lot. Good work.

I was a second year wildland firefighter for the US Forest Service. My crew was in fire camp somewhere in the Ruby Mts. near Elko, NV. We were all in the chow line when someone came up and said Jerry Garcia had died. I couldn’t tell you a Dead song at the time. I remember it was also like the 50th year birthday of Smokey Bear.

    Cool song. Good job.

Man i remember that day. I wasnt a dead fan at the time. I was a freshman in highschool starting two a day football practice and one of the sr. O lineman big silky was setting on some steps crying. He wore garcia shirt under his pads the rest of the year in tribute.

Like PlainAllman, I was working for USFS at the time, Inyo National Forest in California. Backcountry trail crew. Was hiking out of a ten day tour, and some other long hair who was hiking in passed along the news. My dizzy little tie-dyed soul is still wearing the black arm band, but it's undoubtedly printed with roses, skulls, and dancing bears.

Beautiful playing and singing. Enjoyed it a lot, even if I'm not the biggest fan.

BTW, lots of bad things happened on August 9th - the nuclear bombing of Nagasaki, Jerry's death and my marriage to my first wife.
