I have watched a lot of Cubs' games this year and thought I knew the team pretty well.

    So what just happened?

Seven straight losses, many of them by one run. And many of these blown leads in late innings. Was their bullpen situation that bad all season, or did the late innings guys' arms just get tired?

As a Chicagoan, this is historically accurate of the Cubs franchise.

Pick any typical baseball excuse and the Cubs have experienced it this year; no bullpen help/signings at the beginning of the year, stagnant bats all year, injuries, blown saves, mismanaged game situations by the manager, tired arms, bad starting pitching, revolving door of hitting and pitching coaches recently.

I'm glad the Cubs didn't make the playoffs. They didn't deserve to...

Interested in Maddon's share of the responsibility. What do you see as his mistakes?

I sure did notice that their hitting was very erratic--a fatal problem when you're playing 81 games in cozy Wrigley.....

It's just the way baseball is :).

Sometimes there is no valid reason for what happens.

Remember game 7 of the World Series between the Indians and Cubs in 2016 !!??? ;).

Oh, whatever. At least your team will finish above .350 this year. And last year. And probably next year, too.

Apparently the Cubs used up the majority of their runs when they swept Pittsburgh (Sept 13-15) scoring 47 runs in the 3 games. They went dry...

Red Sox fan here, but always rooted for the Cubbies. That is until Maddon became coach. Cant forgive him for what he did to Wakefield in the AllStar game.

Lots of blame to go around, but:

    1) I think they got locked into some really bad contracts that hurt their flexibility. Bad contracts is kind of too nice - just plain poor decisions by Epstein. He admits it too. I still think the Darvish move will pan out - he was very good after shaking off the control rust he had coming back from limited action last year.

    2) I think the young talent train wasn’t nearly as talented as they thought. Bryant and Baez are obviously very talented, but Schwarber, Almora, Happ, Bote , etc have a lot of work to do to be high level players. Too many were rushed to the MLB team and never gained the tools they need to be valuable players. Then they waited too long to get them back in AAA when they were obviously floundering.

    3) Bad baseball. Terrible defense and base running this year. Sub par hitting too, but their defense and base running was a big part of their 2016 season.

    4) Injuries

    5) Questionable manager decisions. I like Maddon for his willingness to look outside the box, but I think he’s got to adjust when it’s clear things aren’t working. His pitcher management stinks and I hated to see players in positions they suck at booting balls around the field, ESPECIALLY late in close games. Many players have vaguely mentioned how revolving leadoff hitters and all the position swapping bothers them.

Anyway, I’ve lived through many much worse seasons than this, but it was undeniably frustrating to witness. They would have got smoked in the playoffs though, so I guess it’s saving me some future heartache.

a team built around cute road outfits and slumber parties is not going to last.
    Maddon is soft.

I do not think he will survive this and could end up in San Diego.

The Cubs just suck. They historically suck.

The Dodgers are going to win the World Series.

    Out.

It is the fiftieth anniversary of the '69 collapse. Just celebrating is all.

The approach at the plate was a big killer this year. Too much swing and miss, especially when it mattered. Guys were still swinging for the fences on two-strike sliders a foot off the plate. Not playing smart baseball in the field, at the plate and on the bases killed this team, along with injuries and some poor signings, caused by the lack of cheap talent coming up from the minors. Theo has his work cut out for him this off-season. That being said, GO CUBS!
