I called customer service at MF.com to add a cheap pedal to an order that I had placed on-line earlier in the day. They were happy to add the pedal (I got free shipping on the additional item).

I asked the customer service rep....

"What's the story behind some of the call-in only sales? Is there a particular day of the month that I should call to get the new scoop? Is there any way to anticipate when to check in on the deals??"

The CSR told me that the call-in deals are always the result of extreme overstocks and huge buy-ins.

I mentioned the Squier Duo-Sonic that I just bought for $199 and he commented that they had brought in a huge quantity of Duo-Sonics. I mentioned the Gibson Melody makers and he said "I don't understand what's going on with Gibson but we are buying truckloads of guitars.....the Gibson and Epi inventory that we have right now is insane".

He asked if I had heard that they have Epi Studio Dots for $199. He told me that the number of Studio Dots that they brought in all at one time was staggering and they are supposed to mention the deal as often as possible. He started selling.....asked me if I had ever played a Dot.

I asked when the Melody Maker deal would end and he said at the end of the month! The guy encouraged me to call frequently just to check in.

The item that I had called to add to my order was a Dano Cool Cat Drive Pedal which is a $24.95 Barber LTD Knock -Off. The CSR ended the conversation by saying...."It was nice talking with you John, let's see if I can knock a couple bucks off the Drive Pedal......it's a pretty low price pedal but I'll give you another three bucks off and we'll ship it free".

I have to wonder if they have some crazy quotas to hit with Gibson. The CSR was very articulate and he went on and on when I asked for more info.

    Interesting (I think).

    FYI,

    John

That's the way to run a business. It's too bad partner company GC doesn't deal the same way.

    Thanks, John!

    (I think). :^)

Great thread. Now, have I got any money to spare right now? Wasn't planning on doing any more spree buying.

As far as GC being in on this, I have a feeling if you show up at GC and dicker with them, they might just have something that will surprise you. Nonetheless, when I saw that 72 MIM Thinline used, marked at $ 549.00, I was sure I could get them down some. Negative.

When I think about the marketplace right now, I can see where Gibson would have a boatload of $480 single pickup (and single coil, at that) guitars sitting around. Kids don't want that guitar, they want an Ibanez shredder, a Strat, or a Les Paul with humbuckers. The mid-priced products tend to be the worst hit in this economic situation. The low-budget consumer is not buying, the mid-budget consumer steps down to lower-end products, and the high-budget consumer remains at the high-end.

To me, the odd thing is that they're only the white ones. I would figure there would be lot of black ones, too. I would expect the sunburst to be the most popular, followed by the black. But a seemingly unlimited supply of white ones? Wow.

I wonder how much more traffic they'd get advertising this instead of just having it be a phone-in special?

My guess is that that call-in thing allows them to get around the manufacturer's MAP rules. Minimum Advertised Price. I don't think that Gibson wants dealers to sell these Melody Makers at $249. Think about the angry phone calls from small dealers who want to sell them at $450.

    Wheelin' & dealin'....

Last month I ordered a Laney Lionheart 20w head that I really liked, but for a variety of reasons called to send it back within the return period. It was a $940 head. They offered to credit my credit card $250 if I would keep it.

    I had a B-stock black Dot Studio.

It was B-stock because the bridge picup rout was out about 3/16 of an inch making the high E-string very quiet (talk about a kick in the pants).

I took the ol' dremmel out and made it work (used a little superglue to hold the pickup ring in place because I had routed out the wood.

That said, the guitar sounded great. If you like fat necks, this is definitely one of them...feels like an acoustic.

But, damn, that was the best sounding guitar I ever played in drop d / drop g tunings. I'm normally not all that into the "chugga-chugga" but with that guitar it was fuuuuun.

That said, I sold it to a buddy who wanted to learn guitar, and said "only that one felt right." :(

I've already bought a melody maker and new amp this week. Please stop these bargain threads before you force me into divorce! (unless you see a good deal on a Casino)

    +1! :p

    +2.

    +3! lol

Could be, I'm not so sure...

Ibanez and shredder types do seem to be the most popular right now, with Tele's and Paul's right behind them. Strats definitely don't seem to be very popular right now.

My guess isn't that MF has crazy quotas to hit; rather, that July 1st is coming up (a big financial reporting date, and although it's a private company, it still has investors and needs credit), and with the economy being what it is, Gibson had to get some stuff sold to someone, and MF was in the best position to make a deal. They'd have to do call ins to avoid violating the MAP (and it gets people on the phone). Of course, this is all just a guess.

i heard Gibson is having ($) problems and probably had to unload a lot of inventory ala Crate and the $149.00 18-watt tube combo blowout ... i doubt that MF is taking the hit on this one ... the next promotion will be a free Melody Maker when you buy a Les Paul Standard ....
