Messing around tonight on a popular tab site.

Learned intros to rebel rebel and Layla (both rhythm and lead - equally great) tonight.

Not that these are necessarily tele songs, but they sure sounded convincing with a MIAB pushed by a rat or tubescreamer into my Princeton.

Anyhow, I don't really itch to listen to these tunes, but playing them sure is both inspiring and nostalgic. For me, these are perfect covers to play.

What else do you recommend, of that ilk? I'm making a list, checking it twice... Good to have some fresh covers in the back pocket for when this worldwide bs ends.

Open G Telecaster - everyone should have a dedicated open G Telecaster - Dancing Days is very fun to play.

some more examples of tunes? I know a lot of Stone is open G. This is an intriguing idea. Can do the strat in standard and the tele in G.

That one will cause carpeltunnel... great tune though. I'd rather do Roxanne probably. Great idea - Police!

When working Jazz musicians say they "know tunes", they mean they know between 500 and 1500 standard Jazz and American Songbook tunes... by heart, and can transpose them. You'll get away with knowing about 250 if you're young and have a good ear.

So, pick a genre, and start with the top 100 according to Billboard or according to the prevailing critics or periodicals.

    Top 100 Blues tunes

    Top 100 Pop/Rock tunes

    Top 100 Soul (R&B) tunes.

Keep making lists. Learn several a week.

I would if i were a professional.. I just don't have that kind of time. I solid set of 15 tunes will take me about 4 to 6 months to have "down" on guitar and vocals. That said, i've probably forgotten around 1000 songs by now. It's worse than with jokes!

My memory sucks, and I bet I've learned a thousand songs over the years too. I maintain a repertoire of about 30 songs at any time. I introduce another and I'll lose one along the way. Been like that for my entire life. I've got a friend who can remember stuff we played 30 years ago. Me, I'll be listening to the radio and say "Hey, I think I maybe used to play this".

I forget lyrics. Lyrics take longer for me. Takes me a long time to memorize more than one stanza of a tune's lyrics. I get the melody right away, but the words ... my brain isn't good with words.

I was in a store yesterday, and the PA was playing "Riders On the Storm."

Robby had a ball with his Tele on that one. Most people don't think of the Doors as a jam band, but it was one of the best.
