The Boss DS-1 Years ago I read that Joes Satriani was talking was talking about his gear and said that he used the Boss DS-1 all the time , there is a trick to the DS-1 says joe , use it into a clean channel and it works great.
I had found one easily , cheap and appearing brand spanking new and bought it , forgot about it and found it in a box this morning while doing micro soft paint art work see the pedal below and listening to the Melvins Bull Head letting the morning Trader Joes Burritos cool.
this afternoon looks promising , hmmmmm more fun .

Yea verily!

It's all I use for distortion/OD on 6 string. When you use it on a clean channel, you've got complete scalability on your sound, loud or soft.

I put a post up about modding a while ago.

The trick for me is cutting the guitar volume and cutting the gain on the pedal (even at minimum it's about 40 or 50 in the first stage) and then creeping into the sound from the clean side.

And... I love how cheap they are. I've got 4.

It is a classic. Kurt Cobain used it all the time, John Frusciante uses it also - his main distortion pedal (also DS-2).
I really like it, sounds good with a lot of gain but can be also used as overdrive with lower gain setting. The only problem is that it is very noisy an you hear it as soon as you stop playing.

I love the ds-1. Stacks beautifully with a blues driver. But by itself, it’s gnarly and powerful. You don’t need to mod it. Just keep he tone blow halfway and use guitar volume to taste. Gain at between 11:00 and 2:00. Or turn the gain right down for a crunchy boost.

I have 2. A standard orange one and a 40th anniversary one.

Love me a bit of DS-1 and agree with putting it into the clean channel, together with keeping the tone low and the level high.

I just got the MXR '78 Badass Distortion
From what I understand it is a modded DS1 circuit

I'm just looking for a distortion pedal to add on to basically my Blues driver which is always on ( at lower gain with a little level boost just to wake up the amp) into a clean amp

and I don't play very loudly so I'm just trying to basically add some real Distortion/sustain, that I can go to once in awhile
hope it works out just got the pedal

Edit- my issue is that when I try to stack say two overdrive pedals, it's a good sound it's a good boost but it's actually maybe too loud and not enough distortion

I love the DS-1 with the gain turned down, great breakup sound. Boss pedals are in generally pretty badass.. I find .myself recently coming back to them more often then I would have thought

Is this ( literally) where you run Controls? Just curious
Edit: so Tone control is really on the left? ( stock)

No. Tone control usually somewhere between 11 and 1, depending on band and venue context. Distortion usually around 2. Level at unity, at 9.

This pedal is about 18 years old, modded about 12 years ago, still on my teeny-weeny board.

I tried the DS-1 real hard to love it but just couldn't get comfortable with it. My main pedal for dirt is an older V. S. Route 66 OD. For heavier distortion I use a TC Electronics Dark Matter. I'm sure the DS-1 is fine if Joe and many others use it------it's just me:lol:

I find it works great as a lead boost in front of an already overdriven sound. Gain off, tone to match your base tone as close as possible, and with a slight volume boost. Makes your leads very liquid.

The guitar kid in my school band was starting to do a few lead fills... I took my DS-1 in, plugged it in and said... just before you do the solos switch to the bridge pu and step on the pedal....and click off again when you finish, back to the neck pu for chords...

the look on his face when he stepped on the pedal and heard the sound was priceless.... a mixture of pure glee/joy and malevolence combined......:D
