I’ve always loved their first two albums. For some reason, this has always been my favorite off Shake Your Moneymaker.

I've always had kind of a love/indifference feeling about them.
Their first two albums were great, as was Warpaint. The rest of them not so much.
They certainly did fill a niche that needed filling though.

Well, the first two albums had two things in common. George Drakoulias producing and working with them on their songs and Brendan O’Brien engineering. Then egos got in the way...

Too bad. Marc Ford is a monster; I always enjoyed his playing style.

Yeah a good read is the book by the drummer, Steve Gorman. I usually don’t read autobiographies but his book about the Crowes is pretty good. It pretty much starts when he stepped off the bus in Atlanta and met Chris Robinson and ends when he finished his last tour with them in 2014 (I think).

I loved SYMM - a pleasant change from the stuff on the airwaves at the time. Southern Harmony blew me away, a giant leap in songwriting and playing. The next few underwhelmed me. Some good songs and playing but too many devoid of interesting melodies. It became more about groove and jamming than songs. Nothing wrong with that, if it's your thing.

Unlike many Crowes fans, I liked most of By Your Side - a return to more straight ahead rock and roll. Lions was a step back, a few good songs, too much filler.

I thought they finished strong - both Warpaint and Before The Frost...Until the Freeze seemed to combine the best of their Stones/Face RnR, the jammy stuff, the funk/R&B, and some really lovely bluegrass-y type stuff.

If you like these guys, check out Blackberry Smoke.

Another group (sadly no longer together) is Robert Bradley's Blackwater Surprise. They were basically Black Crowes with Ray Charles out front. And superb songwriting.

Yes another group like this is Vintage Trouble. Like Black Crowes with Otis Redding on the mic:

    Check em out!

Great tune. Some of their stuff ranks among my all time favorites. Saw them in a couple versions. Really liked them with Luther on guitar. Still jammed but within reason. Luther plays a mean slide guitar.
