I recently bought a '12 Fender AV Tele off of Craigslist and to my surprise, it is the best made and playing Tele neck I've ever had. I've owned a ton of these guitars, THIS one is the best.

It's perfect. Not quite a U shape, but it seems bigger than a C. Perfect.View attachment 679785

What is your preference?
Tie. ‘52 blackguard, 58 Esquire, 62 Tele Custom, ‘66(maybe ‘64?) Tele maple cap neck. All great.

Given that we all have individual preferences, I'm not sure why what I prefer in a neck would be instructive to anyone else, but here goes. I learned many years ago that my forearm/base-of-thumb muscles get crampy when I play a more than an hour or so with thinner necked guitars, but not with thick necked ones. I gradually replaced all my thinner necked guitars, and all the necks on my many partscasters, with thicker ones.

As to FENDER BRANDED TELECASTER necks, my favorite so far is the neck on the Road Worn Brad Paisley - specs are : 1-Piece Maple- Enhanced "V" Shape- 9.5" Radius (241 mm)- 25.5" (648 mm) Scale Length- 1.650" (42 mm, 1-21/32) Width at Nut, neck depth .90 to .99 21 Medium Jumbo Frets- "Oiled Road Worn" Fender Treatment

As to Warmoth and Musikraft, I can be happy with 59 Les Paul neck shape, 10/56 "V" Shape, V to C and some others, as long as the nut width is on the wider side (1-11/16), the thickness is .90 or more at the first fret, the frets are medium jumbo or larger, and the radius is at least 9.5 (or preferably graduated, 10/16 is nice).

But again, why would what I like in a neck have any bearing on anyone else?

In the early 80s, when I was in high school, I took guitar lessons in Kearny Nebraska at Yanda's music.

They had a vintage mid 60s tele that somebody had carved up, grand old opry style, so it looked like tree bark and they had set rhinestones in it too. It would have been great with a nudie suit.

As I recall, some older memories tend to have a certain roseate patina that make it difficult to see clearly through, so I could be mistaken, it had some carving and maybe even some paint and rhinestones on the headstock too. I think they wanted $150 for it. It was a slim rosewood neck with some visible fretware, small frets and nice low action. It was smooth and welcoming, and my blues licks fell effortlessly off lf it.

I played it after my lessons a few times and I loved it and the price was right, it seems like it was going nowhere fast.

After a bit I got a ride up there with a friend with a little bit of money in my pocket to buy it, and the salesguy, T.J, talked me out of the tele and got me to layaway a candy apple red 2-knob strat, which had recently been released, instead.

He told me he thought I'd get tired of the tele. The strat was part of a promo deal and he sent me on my way with a fender sidekick amp and 10 sets of kaman strings, Fender and Kaman were affiliated somehow at the time.

I never did get the Strat out of layaway or go back to Yanda's after that either, come to think of it, I'm not sure how that worked out.

I think I was a little embarrassed about not getting the strat out of lay-away. I suspect T.J. never ordered it anyhow. He's gone now, I heard, so I can't ask him 40 years later.

I think that telecaster had the best neck I ever played on it. I still miss it :)

Time, romance and nostalgia or it really was great? I'm not really sure.

Favorite neck by a mile is on my CS Jerry Donahue Tele. Soft V, 9.5, 42 mm width, and average thickness. A dream.
In 30 years, the only other neck that maybe felt better was an off center V on a tomatillo Strat… but it was 5.5 k and ugly looking!

Clapton V: aka skinny V - or some kind of early 60's c :.8-ish to .95-ish. I like that size C on pretty much any Fender or Gibson...

Don't know about the best persay, but lately, I've took a big shine to this. The neck is 9.5", slimmish, narrow and round, and refretted with tall half-jumboish wire, plays blazingly fast.

I have CS Nocaster and it has a thick neck on it and I love it. It's the only Fender Tele I have ever owned. The first Tele I got was a Carvin TL60. A thinner neck and a bit top heavy, but a great guitar, as well. Late comer to the Tele scene, but here to stay.

The neck on my '52 AVRI Hotrod is my favorite neck ever, with the Baja and Brad Paisley necks a VERY close 2nd. I really like fat necks with the 9.5 radius. I prefer big/wide frets too..... My '52 Hotrod has Jumbo SS frets, my other two have med-jumbo SS frets. Heck, even my Wolfgang has a fat neck with jumbo frets.

But, after saying I like fat necks.....I had a G&L, which had a neck very similar to the modern C, but slightly thinner, and I seemed to fly across that fretboard more easily than on my other 3 with fat necks? Hmmmm.....I need to re-think this! LOL
