No mine personally, but I remember as a kid, one of my neighbors thought Prince was singing, "Me in a red corvette."

It seems odd that someone would dream there were clowns in their coffee...

Oh, you had me several years ago
    When I was still naive
Well, you said that we made such a pretty pair
And that you would never leave
But you gave away the things you loved
And one of them was me
I had some dreams, they were clowns in my coffee
    Clowns in my coffee, and

    You're so vain
You probably think this song is about you
You're so vain, you're so vain
I'll bet you think this song is about you
    Don't you?
    Don't you?

I've got you under my skin
I've got you deep in a part of me...

Maybe that's what Cole intended but he was forced to alter it?

    For me that was
"Wrapped up like a douche, you know, a roaner in the night."

I even looked up "roaner" in the dictionary. When I couldn't find it, I figured it was secret knowledge that adulthood would somehow bestow.

    And this--
"And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows shalt 'em Allah sole"--
I thought was, well, you know how Hindu-y those long-haired rock bands get....

    Very cool guitar sounds, though!

I remember mishearing a song by a group named Shocking Blue. I won't say what I thought I heard, but
the name of the song was "I'm Your Venus"...

Here's another one, from the Rare Earth version of Get Ready. I thought that it went, whenever I'm asked what makes a madre squeal, and it's actually, whenever I'm asked what makes my dreams real! Tooooo frigging silly! Lol

When I was a kid I remember shocking my mother with what I thought were the lyrics to Crazy Horses, the bit that goes 'smokin up the sky yeah' I sang as 'f*****g up the sky yeah.' How I even knew the word I don't know, I'm pretty sure the Osmonds wouldn't have approved.

I was doing my weekly Goodwill run and "Down on the Corner" came on the over head. Immediately thought of this thread, as this was a true treasure trove for the young me.

First off I always thought it was Willy and the PUMPBOYS and it was about a bunch of guys hanging at a gas station. My home town had a little Texaco w/ a service pit that was wedged into a corner of a intersection at an angle so I guess this could be forgiven.

"Tryin to bring you up.."nope Tryin' to bust you up ( I lived in a violent 'hood I suppose)

"On his Kalamazoo.."I could never figure this out.. his WHAT? must be a veiled sexual reference.

And finally "You don't need a PINHEAD" just to hang around..

    Oh my..

They say that where there's muck there's money. Hence, in "Lying Eyes" (hereinafter forever referred to as "Flying Thighs") the excellent line: "I guess every form of refuse has its price".

Ain't it funny how slime tips away?

I think one important requirement to writing/performing a song that is destined to be a legendary classic for many years is that it must have a certain percentage of indecipherable lyrics, that get interpreted many different ways, and mean many different things to various listeners. If everything is clearly and easily understood, the chances of it becoming an epic song are reduced.
As prime examples of this principle, I present "Louie Louie" and "Whiter Shade of Pale".

I was listening to "Guilty" by Barbra Streisand and Barry Gibb last night and happened to look up the lyrics ... and then remembered this thread from a few weeks back. I like this song, and for many years when it came into my head I would happily sing:

    ...
Little by little we meet in the middle, there's danger in the dark
    (Remember the amoeba)
Make it a crime to be out in the cold
    (Remember the amoeba)

    ...

I knew it wasn't right, but fitted so perfectly it seemed good enough in the days before Google made it possible to know everything. Now I know better.

    Remember the amoeba
    It oughta be illegal
