I think "Forbidden Planet" was the best. I wonder why a remake was never done?
Maybe "The Thing" for second best.

    For the worst:

    "Missle to the Moon"

"Plan 9 from Outer Space" already seems to have the honor of the worst movie
ever made, so I would exclude that one from this topic.

2001 was pretty good! That's got some years on it. Gotta love Star Wars, too.

I watched the latest remake of "the Day the Earth Stood Still" on TV last week... mhea...
I think the B&W version I saw as a kid was better sci fi... Micheal Rennie...

Gort stayed as a big menacing robot and blew stuff up.....instead of dissolving into billions of beetles.... who thought of that part?... they lost me there....

I was waiting for hm to blast out of the silo and do some serious damage with his eye lazer and stuff.... yehhhh... robots with eye lazers... cooool....

"Day The Earth Stood Still" was easily one of the best; certainly one of the most intelligent.

I was always a fan of "War of the Worlds" and "When Worlds Collide." "Forbidden Planet" is fantastic.

and who could forget "Radar Men from the Moon"... I loved this series on TV... for the epicness of the drama and music.... and the guys zooming around on the back roads in covered trucks with death rays bolted in back...

I thought it was corny as a kid.. you could see the string the moon ship ran on with a firecracker up it's butt...but great viewing none the less... it used to crack me up watching the flying guy get out his snub nose 38.. the camera would do the big close up shot of the gun in hand cranking off a few rounds...
and flying guy's a few hundred feet up firing at a moving truck.... derrrr......... I had this vision of the bullets stopping before they hit the ground... pttuuurr... like a spud gun...

all the baddies in suits and ties,.stylin..cloaked up moonmen with the technology.... though very wild west... full on arm swinging bar room type encounters .. with flying guy in a dorky helmet.... so funny..:D

Always had a soft spot for this Douglas Trumball (of 2001) directed film...

I think Star Wars qualifies for both best and worst.

    It's a 35-year-old movie inspired by even older Flash Gordon-type adventures :)

    How old is old?

Not quite as old as I think the OP intended, but I always liked the original Andomeda Strain.

Don't forget the story and characters were lifted straight from old westerns and martial arts movies.

    +1 for Brad's list!

    Especially for the Fly.

As for the 60's-Planet of the Apes and 2001 by a long mile.(and the Time Machine too)

Could the Birds count? One of my favorites by Hitch.

I can't pick worst, because I happen to love both the good and bad when it comes to old sci-fi.

    Anyway, cool topic!

Oh, Godzilla! Any will do, but my favorite is probably Ghidorah, the Three Headed Monster.

Star Wars pays homage to the old Flash serials,

but it straight up rips off Kurosawa's Hidden Fortress(excellent movie) and Jack Kirby's cosmic work for DC in the early 70's, particularly the titles in the 4th World saga.

Them - scared the beejesus out of me as a kid
Logans Run (mainly for Jenny Agguter's nude swim, which made a big impression on me as a teen!)
    When Worlds Collide
    Destination Moon
    Village of the Damned
    Quatermass and the Pit
The Day the Earth Caught Fire

These are the ones that stick in my mind from childhood TV
