Heard an interesting piece of the radio (NPR) about this new 10 CD collection. Sounds very interesting. Found this clip on the YouTube. Figured I'd share. So much of the music that I've grown to love has lots of roots in this stuff.

Just checked out the track listing. So much more than Buck and Merle out there...learn something every day.

Yep. Currently, the Bakersfield sound is dead. To get a picture of the current Bakersfield sound, look up Truxton Mile.

You can't go wrong with Bear Family. Simply the greatest reissue label of all time. Well, Mosaic was pretty good too.

Maybe in Bakersfield, but there are pockets throughout North America that keep it going... both the style and the attitude. Music success is too often judged by what radio plays, yet ironically, I don't know anyone that listens to traditional radio anymore ;).

We have a wonderful Bakersfield and Outlaw scene in Western Canada... as long as you don't look for it on radio.

The Bakersfield sound lives with Marty Stuart and his band along with others worldwide. Here in Bakersfield, it’s just a historical footnote.

Korn created a Nu Bakersfield sound, but not steeped in tradition.

Rick Vincent started of as a rock band lead singer here in Bakersfield. Handsome, talented, good guitarist and singer, he went country in the 90s.

Monty Byron has a great band of Bakersfield musicians that tried Nashville. Didn’t exactly work out. He came home and joined the Buckaroos for 13 years. He gave them a more modern rock edge. Monty is a great singer, songwriter, and guitarist.

Here’s Truxton Mile. More modern country from Bakersfield.

    “Nu Bakersfield sound”

That’s cool I like what you did there

I’ll have to admit that Korn was one of the bands that got me to pick up guitar in the early 2000s and I still have a soft spot for nu metal in my heart

I guess in a round about way Bakersfield inspired me before I even knew about buck owens

None of the videos posted in this thread sound remotely like another. For that matter, Buck Owens and Dwight Yokum sound nothing alike. IMO, there is no "Bakersfield Sound" and perhaps never was, just musicians from Bakersfield. But maybe someone can tell me what the distinctive characteristics of the so called Bakersfield Sound are so if I do hear it from other than Buck or Dwight I can shout out...Yeah, Man, that's the Bakersfield Sound.

Yeah, but the Beatles were part of the Bakersfield sound. I read somewhere that they had a deal where every Buck Owens album was immediately sent to England. And of course, Ringo sings "Act Naturally."

$200 for a box set is a bit outside my budget but it would be rally cool!

Here’s another Bakersfield band, Art and the Resistance. Art has a tremendous voice. Look up his other songs.

The Bakersfield Sound lives, if not in B-Town, then in many other places. Matt, you're the scholar of Bakerspatch, but I'm telling you, here in the Midwest / Upper South, the Sound is as happening as ever.

PS: Thanks for the Slim the Drifter cuts!
