The absolute worst waste of bronze in the history of humankind is presently on full display on the corner of Junction and Main street in Sturgis, South Dakota.

If, perchance, you would care to purchase this vague lump of visual discomfort, it can be yours for a mere $32,000 USD.

Enjoy!

Here's some art that's on the corner of Walk and Don't Walk. I didn't ask the selling price.

Tough crowd here. I wouldn’t buy it for my house, but I wouldn’t feel the need to publicly trash an artist’s work either. Imagine someone said those things about your music?
I have split feelings about this. On the one hand, people getting their creativity trashed has caused folks to walk away from something they’re really passionate about and derive enjoyment from a million times, and that’s wrong. It’s also cut careers short because they decide they’ll never be any good, when they probably just need to spend more time working on their craft. The potential is there.

On the other hand, we’ve all seen how harsh reality can be when someone wanders out into the deep end of the real world, when their friends and family never had the guts to tell them they suck. They dive in thinking they’re actually good at something they’re not, because they’ve always been told they were amazing. Because nobody who supposedly cares about them wanted to hurt their feelings. I’ve personally seen that crush a person far worse than an earlier dose of honesty.

As far as the piece in question, I’m sure the artist is successful, or the piece wouldn’t be there. Someone saw something in it. I would acknowledge that I’m probably not qualified to evaluate a piece of art like that, but then again one doesn’t need to be a five star chef to know when their steak is overcooked. That thing is hideous.

Steve Colbert and his delightful wife, Evie have a periodic sketch called "first drafts"

maybe the piece @John Backlund shared w/ us is not the final product?

My guitar designs are publicly trashed regularly on various internet sites, and it's expected to not be able to please everyone all the time, but enough do give positive remarks to compensate for the negativity.

It like water off a duck's back in my case.

I can see a Tootsie Roll mock up before the final casting. If it were actual Tootsie Roll material it would probably melt in the rain. Missed opportunity.

I think people are unused to 3D art. If you look at it as a line drawing, it's just a cartoon.

Might pull $800 as a lawn bench on Etsy.

But $32,000 on the sidewalk? It's pretty much a sure sign - if you live out here, you're gonna get heat stroke.

(The thing is, Sturgis does get plenty of tourist traffic. But how you gonna carry that home on your hog?)

It looks like something that could maybe be... polished... but that some would say you can't polish.

You're right, but casting a bronze piece that size, it's no longer a sketch on the fridge. I'm sure someone hates my music, but I put it into the world, and they have a right to react. It doesn't matter how I feel.
The more you put it out there, the more resources used, the more public it is, the more likely it will get negative reactions. Like when that iphone model was released with a new free U2 album loaded on it. People were actually mad. They get to be, if they want.
Cast it in bronze and put it on a sidewalk in other peoples' space, and people get to have feelings about it.

What I found amusing is that someone actually took the time to bolt it down to the concrete. I guess it's to stop the metal scrap thieves. ;)
