I have always been in awe of him. My wife, who is visiting her native Buenos Aires, sent this link via email to me yesterday. It's the best video I have ever seen of him and I just have to share it. Check out his right hand - finger style, flat pick, hybrid - master of all. And what can you say about Ella?

I had the pleasure of seeing him do a solo show on my birthday in 1990.
He was mesmerizing, brilliant and a little cranky with the sound man.
He was a singular and unforgettable player.
    Thanks!

Used to see him a couple times a year. He was a really nice guy and I miss him. Gave him a ride back to his hotel one night after a show and spent an hour or so with him in the hotel bar. I have one of those little black cigarettes he used to smoke (Nat Sherman's maybe?). Too late to smoke it now probably been in my desk for 30 years! Have maybe a dozen records that he signed.

Wow, Snook. What a great memory! Wish I would have been aware enough to have gone to see him when he was still around. Thanks for sharing that!

    Great great player.
The Jazzmaster is from his Synanon days.
    Here's another side of him:

Fantastic player in every respect. My only criticism of him is that he spent too much time with Oscar Peterson and he tends to over-ornament things the way Peterson did. But he really took chord melody playing to a new place.

His duets with Ella Fitzgerald are works of art.

I went to a Pass/Peterson concert. All those notes! But my favourite part is when they did a ballad together and slowed it down.

Man, don't dis my man, Oscar! ;)
Seriously, I do see where you are coming from, but all the notes in Oscar's case seem to be soooo right!

One of my favorite records is him and Oscar doing "Porgy and Bess". Joe on acoustic and Oscar on clavichord. Hypnotizingly great.

All their stuff during the Pablo years, regardless of who they're paying with, are must-haves. Amazing stuff.

When he's at his best he's incredible and he has such a light deft touch, but there are just too many times when he's like the swing jazz equivalent of a shredder. Not scale run up and down!

    Intro here on Quiet Nights.

And then the solo goes overboard. No need Oscar

Of course me saying anything critical about either oscar peterson or joe pass has to be taken in the context of them both being unbelievably great. If I were holding an instrument and either one of them walked into the room I'd put it down and back away quickly and unobtrusively!

That's the Art Tatum in him.
