Oh, I misunderstood, I thought you were picking the Seahawks in the west...

Cutler is no more of a whiner than Eli or Elway in not wanting to stay where they'd be miserable, right?

If they don't protect Cutler, he is gonna struggle... Aaron Rodgers is getting clobbered tonight too... that is why its the black and blue division, right.

I do think the Hawks are going to take the west but they are far from my team. Eli didn't want to play in San Diego but he signed a deal unlike a certain first round pick who's going to completely screw his chances of playing in the NFL.

For our friend in Corpus.... the reason for the Cowboy hate is the Texas Uber Alles attitude that many Texans and Cowboys fans have... the whole "America's Team" thing rubs some folks the wrong way... so, their reaction to 'how bout them Cowboys' is to say something nasty.

Most fans of other teams don't have the 'oomf' of the Cowboy history save for a few... so, there will be some denigration... not your fault, but lots of cowboys fans are pretty, uh, over the top.

sorry you had to take the brunt of it...

Yeah, I've heard those rationales presented before ("uber alles" and "America's team") as justification for Cowboys hatred.

I might say that there is something to the "above all" attitude if I thought for a minute that Cowboys fans have cornered the market on an "uber alles" posture. But the fact is, such "over the top" bravado is typical of many fans nationwide regarding their team of choice. Examples of this creep in to our discussions here (e.g., "the eagles OWN you"). So for others to justify a hatred for the Cowboys based on the "uber alles" rationale is in many cases an issue of the pot calling the kettle black. It is for the most part a double standard.

As for the "America's team" thing, people need to remember (or do their homework) that this appellation was a tag coined by Bob Ryan of NFL films back in the Landry era as a title for their team's 1978 season highlight film. TV announcers and sports writers picked up on it, and the rest is history. The moment Landry heard it, he thought "Oh, no! Everybody's really gonna be gunnin' for us now!" And he was right, both at the time and even today, as this moniker continues to be an excuse for hatred.

All that said, my original comment was simply an attempt to exercise the same right that seven other members before me had exercised: to express my allegiance to my favorite team without having to bear insults because of it. I identified with and felt I could relate to others expressing their loyalties, especially mchet, not in his particular choice of teams, but in his die-hard sense of loyalty.

I feel the same way about my Cowboys. Have been a fan since the team's inception; I always will be a fan. My mother was born in Dallas and grew up in the area; my father was reared in a nearby farming community. We've been fans since the beginning, and so my loyalties are not only about the team but about family. I shouldn't have to defend that.

And thanks, getbent, for recognizing that I took the brunt of an unfair attack.

I watched the royal defensive brawl that was Green Bay vs. Chicago tonite. I've never kissed a man, but I'd kiss Rodgers, Jennings, and Harris tonite. LIne 'em up, I've got a smooch for all three of 'em.

Those guys pulled that win out in grand style. Made this life-long Green Bay fan proud, even if I was having heart palpitations a couple of time. A win is always good, a win against Da' Bears? Priceless!

Bent's right, if they can't protect Cutler better, he ain't gonna get far where he's playing now. By the same token though, Rodgers got manhandled pretty heavily tonite. The right side of his line is gonna have to tighten up, or it's gonna be a long season for him.

Dallas also has the distinction of having plenty of band wagon jumpers around the country. Every team has it's share of obnoxious fans but the degree of which the cowboys have is amazing especially the people that have never set foot in the state of tejas. And as a Giants fan born and bred I will take any opportunity to hate on the cowgirls.

Man, this is a great thread! I'm already over Crabtree. I guess he is this years Mike Williams.... After watching Beanie Wells first carry tonight... it is hard to give heralded rookies much praise until they have produced.

As Niners fan, I got over any uber alles notions when Ken Norton came over... I realized that I love the team as a team for my area... but the management sees us only as a revenue stream. When Eddie D. and Carmen had the team... I think they were in love with being magnanimous and for the area... they wanted to win for all of us....

I felt that way about Tex Schramm, Rosenbloom, the Rooneys, heck even the cleveland folks who finally left there... there were a few... but, I think so much money is involved now... we're just pigeons... don't get me wrong, I'll root for my teams (I have two) and live and die with them because... well, it is fun to be part of something that is both tangible AND an abstraction.

Sports are fun for that express purpose....

We all have to root for our teams... it is just our nature... that is why I think it is okay to razz each other about it and argue... in fun.

Very good synopsis.

Bears are a good team, so the Pack beating them was no small feat. I'm missing Mark Tauscher. No QB can get hit that often for a season.

Pack defense looked better than I've seen in many years. Finally got a half decent punter and the Offense is good enough to beat anyone.

Packers are flying under the radar and Favre will finally be a distant memory after this year.

My beloved Bears have really started out the year right. 4 INT by Cutler.

I was actually thinking last night as I was watching the game- That it was kind of surreal that Rodgers is really starting to come into his own, and was doing against a Jay Cutler that looked an AWFUL lot like a latter-day Favre last night...

That come from behind win late in the fourth quarter was cool. And Rodger's third in recent history. Too early to call it for sure, but could we be seeing shades of another Elway coming down the pike? There were sure alot of similarities in the last couple of minutes... He made a couple of key wuss moves, I think in those clutch situations, he needs to think more about winning the game, and less about protecting himself. See that last slide for reference. Could easily have been a first down. Equally disturbing were the dropped balls by Driver. Not his usual style, and a little off-putting. Makes me wonder if he's been hanging out in the off-season playing video games with Braylon Edwards.

And to Sire- I can't remember the last time I saw a Pack defense that looked like that. We could be looking at a standout season.

Rodgers is the real deal. I still grieve that the 9ers took Alex Smith over him... My son and I saw him play at Cal and he is very good, very calm and will when a long time in GB. Brett Favre completely ignored him and offered him zero help when he was there and was a total ass to him... but, since he is BF, nobody said much about it... his prerogative and all that.

Cutler is not a favorite in our house as our second fave team is the Broncos... but, in fairness, whoever came up with that game plan and whoever set up the protection is not worthy of their check.

The bears may have problems that have to do with the coordinators as much as Cutler... I think they'll get it together and while the first two Bear games may be ugly, I think they could still win 10 games.
