Many thanks to TDPRI member Derek for selling me his essentially new Fender 59 Custom Shop Esquire. I have needed/wanted an Esquire for a long time now. We helped each other out with the deal.

I put a set of 10-46 Original Bullets on it, tweaked the action a little and what a player! Great Esquire tone in all 3 positions. All the sustain and mojo that everyone raves about from the Esquire. Sounds great through my 5E5A tweed and VibroChamp. Add some heat and you can go from Luther Perkins to Billy Gibbons. Very pleased.

I have some questions for you Fender experts (I’m not one). With the 59 Esquire, what was Fender replicating? Was there a guitar just like this in 1959? I think the original Esquire came around 1950 with a big maple neck. This one obviously has a rosewood board and the neck is a slim modern C taper.

The body of the guitar is relic-ed but the neck is freshly nitro coated. Like I said, I love this beast but just wondering about the history if there is one.

    Thanks,
    Woolly

Yes, they made a guitar just like this in '59. I think the majority were the white blond ones but they did make sunburst. They introduced the Rosewood fingerboard in '59 so this is accurate. Some of these, including the Telecasters, had top loading bridges as well. Some will have single ply pickguards and some will have 3 ply, both accurate for '59. I have a '63 that looks a lot like this except it's a veneer Rosewood board as opposed to a slaboard. These are great guitars. There's really not much you can't do with one of these. Great lookin' guitar you got there, enjoy!

Glad that you are pleased with it. When things turn around, I may come back begging :D. I love the sound and feel of that guitar.

Very nice. Congrats, if I could only convince the wife I "need" one just like it. Wait, I do!! As soon as I build up the cash I'm hunting one down.

Thanks, Wooly. Cash and the Tennessee Two were bedrock for a hugely influential sound.
Luther Perkins set the standard for country tele picking. Cash and his band were musical giants, in my opinion.

    Sorry to hijack.

    Looks great!
There´s just something in the looks that the "lack of" neck pickup gives.
Attitude or "balls" might have something to do with it.
