It's wise of you to bring up the planning issues needed. It's so hard fought but it works in a lot of cases. Our local school and elder centers have small electric cars and utility vehicles, I like that as it good for the localised enviroment.
And those who takes cares of the elderly people can zip around in those without much to worry about, some of our few public busses are also electric, but they are researching more into alternative stuff as time passes, as the busses do not run that long before they need a recharge, but it is still better than diesel.
But the problem is the ever increasing traffic, workplaces are also slowly moving out from the city, the trouble is our habour and all the containers that are transported by trucks, no railways there anymore.
Somebody did not think that through, a change of mentality is needed.
A fundemental shift is needed, right now reality is fighting far-fetched ideas.....
Easy won arguments and grandiose arm gestures covers up any serious thoughts and ideas.
As said a fundemental change is needed in some areas, and by that it has to involve everybody.
Regardless of principels and what not....
Not that I am optimistic about that, living by short termed selfintrests is still how most do it on an everyday basis.
Oh well....
I'm super curious to know how BRT (bus rapid transit) will work here because it will be achieved faster and at lower cost than light rail. Some of the rail corridors we still have get pressure from NIMBY where I think it's absurd to move next to 120+ year old rail corridors and then decide it is a problem.
Just better corridors for commuting and make a big difference but my county is still fighting to finish some links and parts decades later.
