May it be loosely speaking, generally speaking, technically speaking or legally speaking .... the word Telecaster means something to everybody. What does it mean to you?

    Is this a trick question?

It means the fender guitar to me

I guess it could also be someone like Walter Cronkite

The first, the simplest, and arguably the best solidbody electric guitar.

So generally speaking, to me it's a shape that defines the word. Suhr builds fantastic guitars and to clairify what guitar he built, he tags his builds as a Telecaster or Stratocaster ... shapes the average person knows these guitars by.

Well, technically, it has to be sold by Fender, for the same reason that it's not a "Broadcaster." Which would eliminate the G & L ASAT.

That aside, I would think it would have to be single-cutaway and not have a carved top, with a shape like that of a real Fender Telecaster.

And having said that, "Fender" and "Telecaster" is sort of like "Bubba" and "Shrimp." Humbuckers, thinlines, two volumes and two tones, and other variants.

And not all of them are Butterscotch Blonde!

Its as if the federal government made and issued an electric guitar.

Thank you for putting it that way. Since I get to decide what it means to me I've decided that it means anything I want it to. As far as Fenders branding issues go that's all about what it means to them and I don't have a dog in that race.:)

    Again???

The Fender company owns the name. So it's whatever they say it is.

    Depends on the context.

If we're talking about Fender guitars, it's the Fender that says "Telecaster" on the headstock.

If we're talking general styles of guitar, it's fuzzy. Some Telecasters are more Telecaster than others. This is a Fender Telecaster. But is it really a Telecaster?

Telecaster = Body and neck that came together from Fender or Squier.
Partscaster = Not stock body or neck. Even if you mixed and matched from two different Fender Teles, it's a parts guitar. Get over it.
Tele-style = Other brand body and neck in Tele shape.

I once heard a Telecaster referred to as "America's Senior Solid Body"
