What is the purpose of binding on Telecaster Customs?

In the late 50’s & 60’s, what material was used for the binding? Is the same used today on the AO ‘60’s series?

Binding originally served two purposes.. It acted as a bumper" protecting the edges.. and it was used on some as a decorative detail... the "plastic" used in the 50's and 60's was Celluloid Nitrate... while still available, its far more costly than the more "pedestrian" plastics used today...

Ron, are there benefits to the “pedestrian” plastics used today?

I would guess possibly greater durability, less prone to deterioration and less likely to discolor.

It was to create a higher end telecaster. They added binding a new 3 ply guard and introduced a sunburst finish on the custom model. They also charged $30.00 more than the basic tele model. An upcharge that more than payed off in future value.
