I'm new to the Strat scene guys and was a wonderin' if i could expect there to be some difference in acoustic volume ( no amp) between the two guitars..... i guess the difference in body shape has to be taken into account but the difference in volume is quite marked, is this par for the course, the Strat being quite a bit quieter/polite ?

    Thanks guys

If the Strat has a traditional tremelo assembly, it’s acoustic sound will have a slight reverb effect.
It’s caused by the tremelo springs.
The unplugged volume, with similar set ups should be roughly the same.

They both sound pretty quiet when they're not plugged in. Great bedroom volume :)

Unless the strat belongs to Spinal Tap. Then it goes to 11 even unplugged.

    .

Strat is noisier unplugged with the springs and the plastic pickguard. Source: have both.

Nigel Tufnel: (holding up a guitar) The sustain, listen to it.
Marty DiBergi: I don't hear anything.
Nigel Tufnel: Well you would though, if it were playing.

Strats are usually "quieter" as they don't resonate as much as tele, with it's fixed bridge.

The tele bridge plate might increase acoustic volume. At least my tele(ish) guitar is louder unplugged than my hardtail strat. The chunky neck of the tele(ish) guitar might affect things too, though.

The Tele bridge plate acts like a mechanical speaker by amplifying the sound of the strings from vibrations transmitted through the saddles.

A while back when I was deciding between Strats and Teles for quiet unamplified home use, I noticed this pronounced augmentation of acoustic sound produced by the large Tele bridge plate and it solidified my choice.

I am inclined to believe that a Tele has more mass than a Srat and less points where sound could leak. Also the bridge would play a part in the Tele. JMHO

Let me be the first to ask: why is the acoustic volume of a strat or tele even a consideration at all? o_O

You need both so that the tele can feel superior to the strat. Which it is.

First you asked if you "Could expect...difference in volume" and then you say "The difference in volume is quiet marked".

Maybe you meant your first question to be, "Are strats usually louder acoustically?"

Anyway, to compare the two I think you need to put identical new strings on both guitars and then compare.

By the way, I don't think anything on a guitar can amplify sound but hardware can attenuate sound to varying extents. Apparently I can be anal about semantics.

    Acoustic sound?????

It's an electric guitar, it's supposed to be plugged into and amp and played!

Does it really matter ? And why does it matter? It’s unplugged, did you put both volumes on ten? There’s the problem! Sorry the fogs thick here this morning, outside and in my head !
