Not much of a stripshow. The girl kept her clothes on. No singles for you.

Well, I've had a chance to have a good look and a very self indulgent strum.

    Here's her name.

    Named after my youngest!

Here's EllenKirn out of her plastic:

    And one more:

The smell of nitro is lovely (sounds a bit Apocalypse Now!) and it's just so ....

    understated.

I'll report back on how she sounds but first impressions are awsome.

A bit more info ... (sorry long post)

Here's a bit more about this great little guitar:

It's one of Ron's T-styles with a one piece Southern Soft Ash (Swamp Ash) body finished in Nitro and comes in at 7 lbs 14 ounces.

The neck is a “fat back” With vintage style Gotoh tuners, the bridge is the solid brass Gotoh and the pickups are Ron's hand wound vintage style - Alnico V, Formvar coated wire, Vintage cloth covered leads and Forbon Bobbins. There's 4-way switching as well.

Ron's beauties get much praise (quite rightly) for the build quality, attention to detail, set up and mmmmmmmmmojo they have but......

    Not very often commented on.......

    What do they Sound like?

    Well this example is:

    A MONSTER!!

I love it. Acoustically is sustains forever. Plugged in sustains forever and a year.

It is loud but the Kirn-o-blaster pickups deliver a Kirnocopia of sounds - rich warm jazzy through to fantastic honking barking bridge blast. The 4-way switch has let me hear (to my ears anyway) a good LP neck pup tone, a good middle strat tone, classic tele and the honk I haven't heard on anything before.

Apart from being a beaut to look at I'd venture that the pups alone would make this a pro's gigging guitar - it's so versatile. The pots allow you to roll on and off in nice little increments and it's (this is a compliment) predictable. Tell it what to do and it will do it.

There is a downside to this.

This guitar does not make me sound like Danny Gatton, or Redd, or Brent or any fine player. It makes me sound like someone who needs to practice more. It's so revealing. It makes the good stuff sound awesome, absolutely knock-out. It make the bad stuff sound like....... er, ....... me.

I've had this less than 24 hours and I love it.

How does it compare to my CS stuff?

I have a CS nocaster, Esquire and Danny Gatton and they're great. They are fine, well built instruments and I get enormous pleasure playing them and hearing them. They are quality instruments for sure and I feel a certain amount of attachment to them. I'll always get most of my money back on them if I need to sell them because they have Fender on the headstock.

The Ellencaster is different for a lot of reasons (some immediately obvious!) but it feels different. It feels like it was made not assembled. It's been pampered and made to be beautiful in an understated way. A bit Norah Jones rather than Pammy. And it's unique. There is only one 0230 ELLEN in the world and that feels real special.

    Are they worth the money?

    Yes. Unqualified yes.

If you're considering investing in a new guitar there are many fine builders who can make you one and being bespoke for you, you'll get something you'll cherish forever.

I chose a Kirn because of this forum and because Ron posts here and displays his work on the build threads. He gives his $0.02 plain and simple no matter whether it's popular or not and (to me) he makes a lot of sense. He also has a lot to lose. He wins or loses on the quality of what comes out of his shop and by what is said about it on the TDPRI.

I was a bit worried that I'd wake up this morning with buyer's remorse and have to spend some time convincing myself that I had made a good decision to buy in hard times from a guy 3000 miles away that I'd only ever met on an internet forum! Not so. I'm grinning like a Cheshire Cat and can't wait to try and see if I can make some good noises out my new best friend.

Ron, this is a beaut and it's been a pleasure doing business.

Sorry for the long post but hope it may help anyone who may be teetering on a decision.

    cheers

    Ross
