Thinking about future projects, I combined Terry Downs' template with a PRS template I had and this is the result.

The plan is to use a tele or a strat bolt-on neck and keep the Fender scale.

Good idea? bad idea? Any suggestions?

    Thanks

What will you do for a pickguard?

There's really no reason to have that wiring channel rout. If you plan to use a headstock adjust neck, no reason for the open slot between neck pocket and pickup cavity. Leave them out and you could go without a pickguard.

That's a great idea. I might have to do something similar in the future. I would rear route the controls if it was me.

Jack, that's what I was thinking. With a nice wood grain or finish, you could show it off without the pickguard. In that case, I still like the Tele control plate versus using rear routing. Without the control plate, some guitars end up looking "generic" rather than "Tele"-ish, IMHO.

    How Ironic!

I've been working on this template for a few days now. I wanted a thinline tele prs hybrid. I thought I was the only one.

Haven't decided if I want tele twang or humbuckers yet. I also like the "rick" style f-hole, but when I was doing the mock-up the tele style f-hole spoke to me. For the pickguard I was going to go with the mira style and do front routes. I also put a radius @ the neck pocket to help tie it in.

You'll probably get to your's first, (I have three builds I'm trying to finish), please let me know of any problems you run into. I'd like to see someone pull it off.

P.S. Have you thought about the headstock yet?

fluid69 - great minds think alike

I still have one build to finish, but probably I will start earlier than you

I see that you rounded the neck pocket, I think I will leave it as is in my template

the only things I have decided about are:
1 piece African mahogany that will arrive next week
neck will be eithera MIM strat neck or a tele Squier neck, I have both already
    P90s or humbuckers

wow, African mahogany sounds awesome! Yeah, when I saw the title of your thread and then your template with the f-hole, I knew we we're both on the same page. I rounded the neck pocket into the body because I thought it would give it a little more support, plus I thought it would be easier to finish, (seems like a bad place for overspray to accumulate). I would like to see what it looks like with a strat or tele headstock, although I've been thinking about building a neck with a prs headstock. I'm not sure yet either.

I think Ed Roman does a PRS style (Quicksilver) guitar with a bolt on that extends under the front pickup so the cutaway and neck pocket are eliminated...you may want to check it out.

I don't have a router yet, there was a very good deal in craigslist for a mint/new Porter Cable 690 with the plunge accessory for $100, but somebody else got there first. So I ordered a new one, just the 690, should be here early next week.

    I finally got a router :D - WOW what a difference

I finished the body template, I'll post pictures tonight including my rookie mistakes, but the template came out great

I will start working on the routing template later today, and I have a question regarding pickup hole placement.

Let's say I want to put P90s or humbuckers, how do I go about deciding where to put them ? thanks in advance for your suggestions
