119 posts before somebody mentions Muddy ???

I figured Muddy would be at the top of the list, also a late mention for Roy Buchanan, no mention of Luther Perkins ( esquire... a technicality, although Springsteen's Tele , is purportedly an esquire ...) Just recently discovered Joanne Shaw Taylor... check out the youtube clip of her tune White Sugar, paired with SRV's "Rude Mood"... definately the real deal !!!

Most recently, Prince's actually been using Vintage Noiseless Strat pickups. Prefers them over the Kinmans for what he does.

Also, his guitars are the vintage Hohner/HS Anderson Madcats. In the video of the guy from The Invisible, that player is playing the current Hohner tribute model, which is inferior to the original in quality and tone, as well as having a not as nice looking pickguard and the ugliest headstock known to man:

And, to throw in my 2 cents:
    • Prince
    • Black Francis
    • The Boss
    • Strummer
    • D Boon

Mr Judah Bauer, although I guess he's an Esquire hero most of the time.

I agree. Mr. Greene was scary-good (as both a player and a teacher). He died way too young.

Stern is m'man on the jazz front too, but there are quite a few well known Tele players in slightly more trad jazz. I have a personal bias in favour of Ed Bickert. I grew up in T.O.

Sorry, I cannot figure out how the 'embed' trick or whatever it is works, or I would provide some evidence like many others have done.

MAN, do I have to be in the right mood and feeling extremely energetic before I can even read some of the chord theory he presented.

This thread begins and ends with Jimmy Page for me. He is my guitar hero above all others.

Keef is great, too. Take him out of the Stones, and there are no Stones.

David Gilmour's tone on Teles is sublime. I prefer his tone when he plays his LP with P90s, but his Tele sounds beautiful as well. Hell, every guitar he touches has wonderful tone.

Roy Buchanan was such an incredible player. He had his Tele absolutely mastered. He made me realize just how versatile Telecasters are.

I like Jeff Beck's non-Strat playing because he is wang-bar-free. Don't get me wrong, he is one of the all-timers and his Strat work is extremely expressive and vocal. I just prefer him on Teles and LPs.

And then back again to Jimmy Page. His Tele tones were all over LZ I and LZ IV. He fired it up again post Zep, especially in the Firm. I love his B-Bender work. I actually love his other guitar's tones, but his Tele tone slays!

Muddy... 'Nuff said! There is something to be said about what a Tele can do with the Blues. I am learning the Blues on guitar, and the sound of the E and A strings on the Tele for Blues is just not reproducible in a Strat or Gibson.

    Token jazz guy here:
    Frisell, Greene, Bickert & Stern

I hate it when people mask that wonderful tele tone in too much distortion, though, so many of these rockers are out for me :(

My favorite non-twang sound of all involves a guitar, an amplifier and an instrument cable, nothing more...

I can't believe no one has mentioned Joe Walsh. Check out the live video of "Hotel California" from the 70's.
