Steve Howe. Used a tele extensively on 'Relayer' but little or no twang (check out the solo on 'Sound Chaser') . Ironically, Howe shows a massive country influence in his work - probably above any other of the British rock 'greats' of the sixties and seventies. This is one of the reasons that Yes (like em or not) had a really unique sound.
^ One should always read the previous posts before going bargeing your way in at the bottom of the page. Sorry, mate.
Here's another non-twanger; Brazilian samba-funk genius, Jorge Ben. When not playing acoustic, he plays a Tele, usually an old fiesta red one, sometimes a canary yellow one.
I couldn't find a good live clip, but this is a great song from his classic Africa/Brasil album (1976).
Sorry- here's the clip! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gunfjJY6o-Q&feature=related
Well for me...some of my favourite artists play teles that don't twang:-
Simon Neil (of Biffy Clyro) records alot with them and occasionally plays one live
Black Francis is a good call, he used the Tele's dusty blues sound to create a desert rock feel on Surfer Rosa.
And some one mentioned D Boon, another good call! The Tele was used by various members of Captain Beefheart's Magic Band, but with a definite twang on albums like Safe As Milk. Less twang on the more avant albums.
Stephen Stills. "Wooden Ships", among others.
I thought this thread was about Tele players who don't twang. Greg Koch is one of the biggest twangers around. But, that said, he can rock too; so I guess it's all good.....
My buddy Glenn DuLane with a Hot Rails-powered Nashville and a POD.
Bill Frisell - Shenandoah...
Almost forgot - Robben Ford, one of my faves.
Saw this somewhere today...maybe here. No idea who he is.
Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood for one, Jeff Buckley are both tele heroes to me!
Rick Froberg from Drive Like Jehu and Hot Snakes!
heres a 1960 tele thats not to twangy
Mick Green - The Pirates
Richard Thompson - Fairport Convention
David Hidalgo - Los Lobos
Mike Bloomfield - (w/Dylan and Butterfield)
George Harrison (Let It Be)
Roy Buchanan (ok, some twang, but a lot that wasn't)
Rory Gallagher (used 3 pickup Tele for slide)
these guy's are the reasons I play a Tele...
