I’m changing out the control plate on my Japan tele and went to Guitar Center. The Fender ones they had were extremely thin and flimsy. It was not made in the USA. Does anyone know if the USA ones are thicker and more solid?

get one from rutters. made exremely well, plus you can get one with an angled switch slot and with the volume pot hole moved back a little.
they are $30, and worth it.

Hey I recently did the same to my Japanese’s Tele for a loaded one from Six String Supplies here in the UK

    https://www.sixstringsupplies.co.uk/product/loaded-telecaster-control-plate

Basically the pots and caps weren’t too great and doing the swap made a real difference to the tone.

The replacement was pretty much a drop in but as they say on the site:

“The "Made in Japan" nickel control plate is made to Fender dimensions and will fit Mexican and USA made Telecasters with no modification required. It will fit imported models and partscasters but the control plate dimensions might be different - you may be required to drill into your body.”

And this indeed was the case for me - the guitar tech that fitted it for me had to fill one existing screw hole and drill a new one.

If you are swapping just the control plate then you may need to think about the size of the holes in the new one and will they fit your pots? I think it’s a metric v imperial thing.

    Cheers
    J

I use stainless steel ones made by a friend of mine in NJ.

Check out the Classifieds if interested.

it might take a little longer than usual to get it.
i spoke with him and he told me that the place he usually sends things to be chromed burned down a few weeks ago. he found another company to chrome the stuff but they are kinda slow.

Does anyone know if this older one which is made in the US, will be different than the ones made today?

Me too, it's thick and really sturdy. Perfect fit.

I buy classic vibe control plates on ebay, They are the cheapest and easiest to find Nickel plates that i'm aware of. I'm not sure of the pot fitment on japan tele's aren't they metric?
You might have problems fitting metric pots on USA plates due to the slightly larger holes?

True...the pots will be smaller. But, I don't really care for the "mini" pots that are commonly used in the MIJ/CIJ Fenders. When I updated my Japanese Fender Tele i used CTS pots.
