Whenever I look at a nice Tele, I think: "Fender screwed this up artistically, the great curve of the body doesn't flow"

It's the flow of the upper bout to the lower bout through the neck pocket that is wonky. Two little extra pieces are there and kill the beautiful curve. Anyone else ever think that? I've tried to show it here but my artistic skills are minimal.
Normal Tele LEFT, Improved shape RIGHT: I stretched the upper bout longer in the right pic accidentally, it could be the same radius as the left and still flow together.

Never noticed - thanks a lot…. I won’t be able to unsee that now every time I look at a Tele! :D:D:D

Improved shape on the left... Wonky shape on the right...

Make 100 of each with a router and then you will understand.

    You should patent it.

I see what you mean, but I think the neck pocket area interrupts the curve enough that my eye doesn’t see that as one continuous shape that needs smoothing. Rather, my eye reacts to the way the upper bout curve meets the neck...which favors the way Fender does it.

Not trying to be contrarian; others may perceive the shape differently. Just thinking it through here.

I used to know a guy with a Yamaha Pacifica something or other that was Tele-ish, and I think it had a curve more like your suggested shape...maybe? It was a killer sounding guitar, I recall that.

Hah! If I did I would move the neck pocket about a half inch further into the body. Less pocket overhang and moves the nut half inch closer to the player.

those two 'wonky' bits are what keep the last 2 hard angles off the tele.

nicely rounded curves everywhere else, looks weird without the two neck pocket curves.

Lots of people have done versions of your "improved" shape, and I just despise it. I absolutely hate it when it looks like the cutaway starts on the bass bout. I don't even know why I like the tele's slanted bass bout, but I think those two bits you don't like are what makes it work for me.

DMdKiLJWkAE5tp9.jpg 11fender1972_465_608_int.jpg I noticed this also. But, as an artist, that's normal for me.

Around 12 years old, or so, I had a pretty crappy guitar, but dreamt of Fenders.

Couldn't afford one, but I could draw them, and I did...OFTEN.

I'm sure some of you guys remember the old Fender ads, on the back of Hit Parader magazine. I LOVED em and practiced til I could draw em from memory.

To this day, I still can draw a Strat, Tele, and LP. Those were my favorites...especially the large Strat headstock.

I think I had an old Teisco bass, for awhile, and pried the logo medallion off and hand drew the Fender logo on it in marker. I put a lil clear tape over it and I was rockin.

I wonder did the design give the body a smidge more room to seat the neck.

Never noticed that before. I totally understand what you're saying. The shape on the right makes much more sense. That said, it looks wrong and I hate it.

It's worked for over 70 years now. Why change it?

I like the original design. It lets each side the body flow into the neck rather than having abrupt angles. (I just noticed that @Racer5 mentioned that above).

It probably helps with stability too.

I think it’s been done already. Easier to implement on a set-neck...

I always assumed it was something design-wise to help stabilize the neck in the pocket. Doesn't bother me in the least. Teles look very right to me.

It was Leo’s zany wacky ideas that made the Telecaster what it is. Take that away and we’d all be playing acoustic f-hole guitars with pickups screwed onto their tops.

Gibson laughed at Fender’s “canoe paddle”, but look who’s laughing now (a gazillion Tele owners can’t be wrong)...

On the upper bout you just created a corner for dirt accumulation.

The transition from body to neck would look much worse with that smooth curve IMO.

The original looks fine to me.

There is just no way to improve the original Telecaster design. Every attempt to do so falls way short.
